Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Owens
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always enjoyed making people laugh, it’s how I communicate, how I connect everything. I was at a community college in my hometown and was absolutely miserable. Comedy is something I always wanted to try so I googled ‘how to become a stand up comedian’. I learned about open mics and signed up for the mic at Relapse Theater. That was followed by 4-6 years of terrible comedy from me, thank you to everyone who booked me and encouraged me during those years, by year 6 I wasn’t good, but was at least good enough to not destroy a show.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
If anyone in comedy had a smooth road something isn’t right. Comedy is always bumpy and that’s the fun. Finding your voice, jokes bombing, learning from other comics, celebrating friend’s success. The challenge of comedy is a fight against yourself. It takes a lot of redefining of goals, challenging yourself, questioning your beliefs, and what success looks like to you.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a stand up comedian. I’m most proud of my independant special/album hitting #1 on itunes and crossing 55k views on youtube.
How do you think about happiness?
My wife makes me happy. Happy relationships have a historically weird relationships with comedy. We all have heard comics bash their wives, marriage, etc. But it makes you funnier. My wife has done nothing but improve every aspect of my life. She makes me laugh, challenges me daily, and has been nothing short of the most positively impactful thing in my creative journey.
