Today we’d like to introduce you to Degnilda (Nina) Diaz.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey started back in Venezuela, where I’m originally from. I’ve always been passionate about design and decoration—so much so that I studied architecture. Over time, that creative passion naturally found a new outlet: cake decorating. What began as a hobby—making cakes for friends and family—slowly turned into something more meaningful.
I never took a formal course; everything I’ve learned came from watching my mom, experimenting, and absorbing knowledge through online tutorials. When I moved to another country, one of the biggest challenges I faced was starting over. But that transition also gave me the push I needed to turn my hobby into a small business.
Today, I specialize in both cake decoration and creative stationery for parties. I’ve built a beautiful community of clients, and I feel so grateful every time I get to be part of their special celebrations. What drives me is the joy my creations bring to others—and my dream is to keep growing and turn this passion into a thriving business.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road—but every step has been worth it. Moving to the United States was one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced. Starting over in a new country, with a different language and no network, was overwhelming at times. I had to rebuild everything from scratch.
But early on, something beautiful happened. I met an amazing woman named Lili who, without even knowing me well, gave me the chance to make her wedding cake. That moment changed everything—it opened doors and brought me my first clients here.
There have been times when I’ve doubted myself. But when that happens, I take a step back, re-evaluate my goals, and come back stronger. What keeps me going is the support of my family and friends, and above all, my faith that I can achieve what I dream of.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in personalized cake decoration and creative party stationery, with a strong focus on birthday celebrations. Every cake I make is custom-designed based on my client’s vision. They usually come to me with an idea or theme, and from there, I create design proposals. We work together to choose the one that best fits their dream celebration.
What sets my work apart is the attention to detail and the way I bring each theme to life—not only through the cake itself, but also by complementing it with creative paper decor like cake toppers, tags, and party favors. I love making everything feel cohesive and special, so the event feels magical and unforgettable.
What I’m most proud of is being able to translate my clients’ ideas into beautiful creations, and seeing the joy it brings them. Watching their reactions, especially when they see the final setup, is incredibly rewarding. I’ve grown so much since I started, and it fills me with pride to see the level of work I’m able to deliver today.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Yes—don’t be afraid to start small, and don’t wait until everything is “perfect” to begin. If you have a passion, follow it, even if at first it’s just a hobby or a side project. I started with little more than love for what I was doing and the support of my family and friends. There were moments of doubt, moments I wanted to give up—but every time I paused, I came back stronger, with more clarity and purpose.
I wish I had known that growth takes time, and that comparison is the thief of joy. Your path is yours alone, and every step, even the hard ones, are shaping you. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, and stay true to your values. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small. And most importantly—believe in your talent, even when others can’t see it yet.
