Today we’d like to introduce you to Beverly Hairston.
Hi Beverly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My hair story started when I was conceived. Being blessed with such a unique last name has set the bar high for this story. “Hairston” Learning how to spell my name was mind blowing while learning that my name has two nouns, hair and ton, I became obsessed. As a kid I grew a love for hair while sitting in many salons throughout the Metro Atlanta area. I can remember the smell of hot Marcel irons and relaxers being applied to natural hair. I grew up visiting a hair salon every week, either I was sitting to receive a service or I was watching a service. My mom’s go to hairstyle for me as a kid was the designer styles of cornrows with colorful or clear beads at the end. She would decorate my braids and I would fall in love with the color and noise. Shaking uncontrollably for the next few weeks. While growing as a teen I continued to receive services of relaxers, roller sets, and styles under a hairdryer. It wasn’t until college that I had the genius of idea of discontinuing relaxers and learning how to manage my natural curly hair. During this journey I stumbled upon my love for styling extensions on others. This sparked more than just a career in the hair industry, but it taught me how to be an entrepreneur. I began installing extensions on my friends and family and the journey has not ended. I now have a mobile hairstylist platform servicing clients with styles such as extension installation and natural hair styles. My mobile hair journey Bee.Hairston LLC transferred to an extension online hair company, “Hairston Factory”.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This story has been my life. There are many bumps in the road. The biggest one being losing my father. The man who gave me this last name. He is motivating me to do this more than anyone knows. I am working diligently to break generational curses and to give opportunities to my family. Not to mention the financial strain of this journey. While falling in love with the hair industry I chose to dedicate my time to earning a degree in construction management from Georgia Southern University. I know the two seem like they’re on different ends of the spectrum, but both will always be in demand. While studying for school I would only style my hair or my friend’s hair for extra money to continue practicing my craft. I can remember buying all of my first tools with a different check, whether it can from a refund check from the university or a small job at a restaurant. I have worked a plenty of jobs that always remind me how important hair means to me. No matter where I am or what I’m doing hair is always involved.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I hold a professional title of a certified Safety Manager in the construction industry. I am currently working on the build of a database center in the Southeast region of USA. I wake up at 3am every morning to prepare my son’s lunch and iron clothes. I arrive at work at 5a.m. where my duties include first responder on site and providing aid for personnel. I am surrounded by the many trades of electricians, carpenters, welders, large excavators, and dirt. My love for construction runs just as deep as hair. I love to watch the excavation work develop into a five story building with operable rooms. It’s a beauty that you can’t imagine, but it’s happening around you all day every day.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
My favorite apps are tik-tok and Instagram. I receive most of my daily laughter and business/marketing ideas from these two apps. My favorite book at the moment is the Bible and all devotionals. I need the reminder of peace with everything going on in my life.
