Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Atwood.
Hi Jeff, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a former healthcare worker. I formerly worked in the ER and the OR in radiology. I decided to become self employed and had the opportunity to join a startup Restoration Company as a partner. I learned that many aspects of healthcare such as infection control, isolation, disinfection could be applied in many services in emergency property response. As a result, after training and numerous certifications, I became qualified to not only respond to water damage and mold remediation, but also to other biohazard situations such as sewage spillage, meth lab cleanups and even human trauma such as murder scene and suicide scene abatement. I often partner with real estate professionals who encounter “Sick Properties” and need guidance on Best Practices to restore that property to a safe level and save more real estate deals. I also am approved by the Georgia Real Estate Commission to provide educational courses as CE credits for agents and Brokers.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No it hasn’t been smooth or easy. There is a tremendous presence of competing restoration companies. My challenge has been to set myself apart with best practices and attention to how our work impacts the health of those living in these affected properties. There are many bad players in the restoration industry. Some of them untrained. Some of them predatory often putting profit above their clients who are victims of some sort of property disaster. I try to bring industry expertise, along with empathy to care for their needs. Sometimes, I have had to do work pro-bono for individuals who had no available resources, but they certainly deserved a healthy solution to their problem.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As I previously mentioned, I am a former healthcare worker. Instead of caring for sick patients, I now care for sick properties. I recognize that effective restoration work can directly impact the health of people living in sick properties. My background in infection control and my care for a person’s wellbeing, is especially important to those who have weak or unwell family members. For example, properties with mold can worsen the effects of asthma. Or those with compromised immune systems will appreciate attention to detail in best practices, so that their health is taken into consideration in the types of chemicals used, or methods we use to isolate sick parts of properties. We have adopted the slogan “We Are the Cure For Sick Properties”. So we hope that our health centric approach to restoration and remediation or abatement, sets us apart from other less trained or less empathetic restoration contractors.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I had fond memories growing up in the mountains of South Atlanta near Newnan in the early to mid 80’s. We had tree houses to build, woods to explore, lakes to fish in, and the town was small enough to bicycle around in. We spent endless hours on weekends, riding around with our buddies all over!
