Daily Inspiration: Meet Aaliyah Serrano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaliyah Serrano.

Hi Aaliyah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story begins 8 years ago, when I was a 21-year-old college student. I was pursuing a degree in something I wasn’t passionate about, but doing what I felt was right in the moment, because I didn’t know what I wanted to pursue career wise. Back then, I started getting creative with make-up because, who didn’t get cute for classes! Because of that, I discovered my love of all things beauty. My interests led me to pursue jobs that were centered around the administrative side of the beauty industry, and these experiences really changed my life. To see the connection service providers and their clients have ignited something in me, I wanted to be in the treatment room! I decided to make a change in my life, so I quit college and began an esthetician apprenticeship at the lash studio I managed. COVID put a pause to that journey but I didn’t give up. I got my esthetician license in 2021 and since then I have successfully treated client’s skin concerns, specializing in acne and hyper-pigmentation.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest personal struggles that I’ve had to overcome is impostor syndrome and self-doubt–especially in the beginning of my aesthetic career. Even after I got my license, there were times where I questioned if clients would trust me or if I was really good enough to get results. I found myself constantly comparing myself to others, which only makes self doubt worse. But overtime, I realized that confidence does not come before experience, it comes through it. I had to keep reminding myself of the value that I bring by having integrity, caring for my clients and being results-driven. As time passed, I began to see the difference that I was making with my client’s skin and hearing how appreciative and grateful they were really helped to ease the doubt and own my role as a skin therapist.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a licensed esthetician and I specialize in acne and hyper-pigmentation, but overall caring for the health of skin! So you do not have to have acne to come see me. Skin health is important for everyone no matter the age or condition that you may be dealing with. I am most proud of the acne clients that I have treated and gotten clear. Skin conditions such as acne can have such a damaging impact on one’s self esteem, so the fact that I have made that big of a difference in someone’s life means everything to me. What sets me apart from others is my integrity in the treatment room. I am not the esthetician that will just sell you products and services if you don’t need it. I am very realistic and upfront about what is achievable and what is not and what it is going to take to get clients the results that they desire. I customize treatment plans and home care specifically to their needs, because every client is not the same.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I have always been creative at heart whether it was arts & crafts, drawing, creative writing, or band, expressing myself in the arts has always been big for me. One of my favorite childhood memories is with my best friend of 20 years. We loved to write stories about superheros and villains and then act our stories out over the phone. We would talk on the phone for literal hours and we just never got tired of it. I believe that is a huge reason why her and I have continued to be friends long into our adulthood and I am so grateful to have her.
