Meet Flo Sheffield of Yoga- I teach yoga at Sweet Tea Yoga and Balance Yoga Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Flo Sheffield.

Flo, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I found my way to yoga in 2006. I began like many do… in a gym. I started with one class a week, then after several months of practice, I went on the hunt for more. I showed up at the doorstep of Balance Yoga to attend a Led Primary series class in February 2007. It was the hardest practice of my life, but at the end, I knew I had found what I had been searching for. I have been very lucky to have Balance Yoga Atlanta to practice under the guidance of Marsha McNeight and Kathy Koher. I have been on the teaching staff now since 2016.

It was through the practice of Ashtanga yoga I also obtained my sobriety. I struggled with Alcohol and food addiction for the last 5 years. I have come out the other side now with 2 years sober and also lost over 65lbs. It is through the dedicated practice of yoga and having a supportive community that helped me.

My hope is to help others through the combined power of Ashtanga and recovery.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. I have battled addiction and through the support of the community at Balance yoga and being open with them I’ve grown to be a part of a yoga family. I am fully supported and accepted as I am.

It’s our mission to provide yoga as a tool to aid in the recovery process and help those who are suffering maintain long-term sobriety.

At balance, we provide yoga to those struggling to maintain sobriety and I am a mentor to those in our scholarship program.
