Today we’d like to introduce you to Larry Brown.
Hi Larry, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have also been into firearms. I remember as a kid having a BB gun and playing in the yard. I would set up my own targets and just enjoy running around shooting the boxes and things. As I got older, I purchased my first firearm at 21 while in college. I had never shot a real gun until then and I enjoyed it. I still knew nothing about training but I got my permit to carry up in Tennessee and we had to shoot to pass that course. I still was very green but when I joined the National African American Gun Association through the Bass Reeves Gun Club (Metro Atlanta and Founding chapter) in 2017, this is where I started to understand what training was. The years leading up to this point I would get friends to ask me to take them to the range and that continued as I learned more. During 2020, I decided that I wanted to officially become an instructor. I wanted to be in better position to pass on knowledge as I understand how to be better myself. After passing the instructor course I started my own company, Lion’s Den Tactical. With that, I also started helping out more with Bass Reeves Gun Club. I started taking more classes myself and expanding my skillset and knowledge. I continued to grow as instructor for both the club and my company. My efforts in the club did not go unnoticed as in 2023, I was chosen as the 3rd president for Bass Reeves Gun Club. I truly believe my business has sustained and I have been afforded the position as president because of my desire to give back, maintain a standard of safety, and to make sure everyone I come in contact with leave better than they arrived.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No the road has not always been smooth for me. This is my first business venture and there was a lot of learning done in the early years. But I am always seeking knowledge on how to be better. I am not normally an in front of the camera person so I continue to work on the content creation and marketing piece of this business. I also had to learn what works best for teaching in the state of Georgia. Unlike some states, Georgia does not have a class requirement to get a permit so I had to find ways to market and teach differently. Not having a physical classroom I had to be creative on teaching on the range. So while not the smoothest road, it has been a rewarding road for personal growth.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We feel that it is important that we exercise our 2nd amendment right and learn how to do it safely. If you are new to firearms, have a firearm but want to learn more, or have kids and want to be safe with them and have them learn, we are here to help. We create an environment that is safe for learners of all ages. While firearms are a serious matter, we are committed to an educational environment that is interactive and fun.
What sets us apart is that while we teach you how to shoot we stress the fact that you have to be a thinking shooter. Pushing the mind as an individual progresses through the program is something I am very passionate about. Learning the skill of shooting is great but if we can make sound decisions and avoid situation, that is even better.
I offer classes for varying skill levels, women’s only classes, Stop the bleed class, Emergency First Aid coming soon along with Non-lethal classes. The primary platforms I work with at the moment are pistol and rifle.
What does success mean to you?
Success in for me would be scaling the business and growing educated population of firearms owners in addition to growth of instructors who may work under my brand. In addition, I want to get to the point where we have a wait list for classes and also well-rounded firearms owners. Success is having a student leave understand not just how to shoot but how to think, apply situational awareness and how to give life saving medical care.
