Hidden Gems: Meet Kelly Yabsley of Messy Baby Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Yabsley.

Hi Kelly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started working on Messy Baby Co. 7 years ago! When my daughter was born, I found myself always battling her diaper blowout disasters, and when I couldn’t find any viable solutions on the market that would help, I started dreaming up ideas. I began with an invention company that promised to help get my product created, but that was a bust. Once I got referred to a patent lawyer, I was able to apply for my patent to protect my new idea. Finding manufacturers proved to be a challenge. I was struggling to find anyone that understood my needs for the disposable pad. Once I finally did, COVID hit and all the manufacturers began focusing on face masks and other COVID-related productions, or supplies ran out. So, back to square one. I finally got turned on to a company that was able to help me source a new manufacturer, and after many prototype samples, we FINALLY got my Baby Booty Blowout Gear created!

My Baby Booty Blowout Gear is a baby onesie that was designed to fully snap down the front for easy baby removal. Gone are the days of pulling a nasty, soiled garment over your baby’s head or dragging it down their body. Our onesie is fitted with a large absorbent disposable pad that adheres in the back to help catch and contain all the blowout that escapes the diaper. Once it’s soiled, pull that bad boy out, toss it away, slap in a new one and get going again. It was designed to be worn as an undergarment to help protect all those adorable baby clothes from disastrous poo stains, but I have plans to expand my line to include patterned fabrics so they can be worn on their own as an outfit. With 1/3 of parents fearful of taking their baby out in public due to blowout mishaps, we are giving what I like to call “functional humor” to their messy SHITuations and giving them back the confidence to get back out in public or traveling with their little nuggets.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all! Its been challenging and overwhelming and expensive, but I refuse to quit! (read last question for some of the struggles along the way) Now that the product is out in the world, the greatest challenge has just begun!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Our Baby Booty Blowout Gear is the new “must have” gift for new parents! With over 3 million diaper blowouts happening WEEKLY in the US alone, there is a huge need for products that address these poocano disasters! Messy Baby Co. brings humor to these messy SHITuations, and a product that actually helps. When we first started, there were only 2 other blowout products on the market, but they either required scrubbing poo out of a cloth diaper extender or throwing away the product every time you changed a diaper, which sounded like a huge waste. Our Baby Booty Blowout Gear onesie is reusable, while the pad only has to be thrown away once soiled. I also HATED the idea of dragging soiled clothes up over my baby’s head or down their body, so I made sure to address that also, with our full snap front. Simply roll your baby out for easy clean-up.

As of now, I’m most proud of creating something that I truly believe can help make parents lives easier, I’m on the track to leave a legacy for my children, and working towards my dream of creating a charity with a percentage of the sales to be able to give back to others. I’m also very proud of how far I’ve come with putting myself out there and growing slightly more comfortable with being uncomfortable. As someone who hates the spotlight on me, I’ve forced myself out of my comfort zone and joined a couple tv competitions for businesses. I will air on season 17 of The Blox, an entrepreneurial startup competition hosted by Wes Bergmann of MTV reality shows, and I will air on Forbes Riley’s Ultimate Pitch Off competition. I’ve also been named one of P.O.W.E.R. Magazines Women of the Month. They may not seem like the greatest feats to some, but for me, I’m proud of the momentum I’m gaining as I learn and grow.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The baby industry is constantly growing, with so many incredible new inventions being produced all the time. I know that I have an uphill battle to fight my way into this market, and will always need to be thinking of more innovative ideas and more product line expansions. I foresee many new products entering the market that address blowouts, as people begin to understand how much of a need there is for them. But I also see alot of growth for Messy Baby Co. in that time.
