Inspiring Conversations with Tamika “Mika” Newton of Zenmi, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamika “Mika” Newton.

Hi Tamika “Mika” , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My path to becoming a sound therapist wasn’t a straight line—it was a healing curve. I spent years in corporate leadership, managing teams, hitting deadlines, and checking all the boxes. From the outside, it looked like I had it together. But inside, I was exhausted. I didn’t realize I was burned out until I literally couldn’t keep pushing anymore.

What started as a personal pause turned into a full transformation. During that time, I reconnected with sound therapy—not just as something soothing, but as something that helped me regulate my nervous system, rest, and feel human again. That experience opened a door I couldn’t ignore. I got certified, started holding space for others, and eventually built Zenmi Sound—a wellness practice rooted in rest, resonance, and nervous system repair.

Today, I offer sound therapy for individuals, groups, and organizations. My work blends science, soul, and intentional care. This isn’t just a new career—it’s an offering. One that came from me choosing to listen inward and build a life that feels aligned, sustainable, and whole.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The transition definitely wasn’t smooth—and I think that’s important to say out loud. Leaving a steady corporate career to step into the unknown felt like walking without a net. There were moments of fear, doubt, and wondering if I was doing the right thing. Financially, emotionally, and even socially—it was a shift. I had to redefine my identity outside of my title and learn how to trust myself in a completely new way.

One of the biggest obstacles was unlearning the hustle mindset. I was so used to over-functioning that even in healing work, I had to remind myself that rest was not laziness—it was the foundation. There was also the challenge of building a business from scratch, wearing all the hats, and educating people about what sound therapy really is.

But even with all the growing pains, I wouldn’t trade it. Every challenge brought me closer to purpose. And now, I move with clarity, not urgency—and that alone has been one of the biggest wins.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Zenmi Sound is a sound therapy practice rooted in rest, nervous system healing, and intentional care. I specialize in private and group sound bath experiences—offered in homes, retreats, wellness spaces, and corporate environments. Whether I’m working one-on-one or with a room full of professionals, my focus is on creating calm, restorative spaces where people can release, reconnect, and reset.

What sets Zenmi apart is how personal the experience is. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. Every session is curated with intention—guided by my training, but also by lived experience. I know what burnout, anxiety, and overwhelm feel like, and I bring that empathy into every space I hold.

I’m most proud of the trust people place in me. Zenmi has become known for offering sessions that feel sacred, grounded, and safe. I’m also proud of the way the brand continues to grow—collaborating with wellness centers, hosting floating sound baths, and bringing this work into boardrooms and breakrooms where it’s needed most.

More than anything, I want people to know that Zenmi Sound is a place where you can exhale. It’s where you come to slow down, soften, and feel again. In a world that constantly asks us to push through, Zenmi offers the opposite: a gentle invitation to come home to yourself.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5 to 10 years, I see the wellness industry becoming more holistic, more inclusive, and more integrated into everyday life—especially in spaces that traditionally ignored it, like corporate environments, schools, and healthcare systems. There’s a growing recognition that wellness isn’t just physical—it’s mental, emotional, spiritual, and environmental. Sound therapy, in particular, is gaining traction because people are finally realizing the power of nervous system regulation and energetic alignment.

I think we’ll see a major shift toward preventative wellness—offering tools and support before burnout, anxiety, or illness set in. Practices like sound therapy, breathwork, and somatic healing will become less “alternative” and more essential. And as more people prioritize nervous system health, rest will no longer be treated as a luxury—it’ll be seen as a requirement.

I also believe there’s going to be a greater demand for culturally responsive wellness—spaces and practitioners that understand the unique experiences of marginalized communities. That’s where I see Zenmi playing a role: continuing to offer grounded, soulful healing spaces that honor both science and spirit, and meet people exactly where they are.
