Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Edwards.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started with a deep love for writing and a passion for helping others—especially children—understand their value. My journey as a writer began when I started journaling my life experiences, using words as a way to process and reflect.
A few years ago, while working in the school system, I met a young student who was experiencing homelessness and possibly bullying. She initially came to me for encouragement in pursuing a music career, but I quickly realized she needed something more—she needed my story. I had also experienced bullying as a child, and I felt compelled to share that part of my journey with her. That encounter led to my first children’s book, Kevin Turns Fear Into Feat, which not only helped her but has since touched the hearts of many children near and far.
As I continued to write, I recognized a deeper need: many children, especially those from underrepresented communities, longed to see themselves in the books they read. They needed stories of resilience, empathy, culture, and courage. Stories that reflect who they are. That realization inspired me to create additional books, including Kevin’s Big Win, This Is How My Santa Looks, Barkley’s Big Adventure, and Kevin’s European Christmas Tour.
Each story I write is drawn from real-life experiences—whether it’s about overcoming bullying, exploring cultural heritage, or viewing holidays through a different lens. From reading my books at summer camps to teaching writing workshops, every moment of this journey has been about pouring into the next generation.
Today, I continue this path with purpose, knowing that the right story at the right time can truly change a child’s life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, my journey has not been a smooth road—but every experience has shaped me and brought me to where I am today. Early on, I learned a difficult but valuable lesson: the people I expected to support me didn’t always show up. That was painful, but it taught me something powerful.
I came to understand that God will bring the right people to support what I’m creating. He has a specific audience for every story I write—someone who needs the exact words I’ve put on the page. That realization gave me peace and purpose.
I stay focused on writing from the heart, and I trust that God will place each book in the hands that need it most, at the perfect time. Every step hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth it—and I wouldn’t trade the journey for anything.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a social worker, singer, and author with a heart for service and storytelling. I specialize in creating meaningful stories that uplift children—especially those from underrepresented communities—while also working on the frontlines of social change through my work in social services.
I’m most proud of the two gospel CDs and singles I’ve recorded, my unforgettable European tours, the six children’s books I’ve self-published, and my work as a social worker helping house individuals who are homeless. Each achievement reflects a different part of who I am, but they’re all connected by a common thread: compassion and purpose.
What sets me apart is authenticity. I don’t just do this work—I’ve lived it. I believe God chooses people who have experienced pain to turn it into purpose. I’m walking in a calling, not just a career. That’s what fuels me to keep creating, singing, and serving every day.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Yes—staying grounded and inspired is essential to both my creative work and my service to others. I currently read a daily devotional that lifts my spirit with encouraging stories and closes with a prayer, helping me stay centered and focused.
I also listen to a wide range of podcasts that offer wisdom, motivation, and practical insight. Some of my favorites include the Jay Shetty Podcast, The Pivot Podcast, Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson’s Podcast, and the Jamal Bryant Podcast. Each one speaks to different parts of who I am—from emotional wellness to leadership to faith.
In addition, I often revisit old interviews and readings by Toni Morrison. Her depth, grace, and mastery of storytelling continue to inspire my own writing journey.
Together, these resources help me stay encouraged, focused, and committed to doing my best work—not just for others, but for myself.
