Today we’d like to introduce you to Micah Satterfield.
Hi Micah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
From the time I was a little girl I always knew I wanted to be a hair stylist! My grandma did hair for 55 years and I used to go to the salon with her to sweep and talk to all of her clients after school. My favorite thing was getting my hair done so that I could go mix color with her! She used to get me mannequin heads to braid and curl for every. single. holiday.
I did my first wedding as a hairstylist when I was 16. Of course it was intimidating, but that day I knew this would be my career forever! Now I am doing over 45 weddings this year and working for the most incredible glam team- Collins Cove Glam Team!
Right when I graduated high school I started an assisting position at J Hornor Salon (previously J Green Salon) in Gainesville where I later ended up beginning my apprenticeship! A few months into my apprenticeship I left J Hornor to begin working at The Peach Salon (also in Gainesville). This was where I learned that I wanted to be a salon owner and met my forever bestie, Amber! Together we created Manes Hair Co and are having the best time!!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I feel like as a small business owner it is NEVER a smooth road! Being a salon owner at 20 is amazing but of course has its struggles. I’m going to be honest, before opening Manes I had never paid a bill in my life- now that’s what I do every day!
One of my biggest struggles was starting in school and switching to an apprenticeship! I started in hair school and quickly realized that it was not for me! I didn’t love the environment and it was not the best way of learning for me. This took a toll on my mental health which lead me to being a “beauty school drop out” as some people would call it!
My passion for hair never changed through it all. Luckily, I had an amazing team at J Hornor that introduced me to the idea of an apprenticeship. There I began my apprenticeship and it was the best decision, truthfully I wouldn’t be where I am today without it!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I do absolutely everything at the salon (except for perms lol!!!) I offer all color services, haircuts, extensions, smoothing treatments, etc!!!
My most favorite thing to do is blondes and extensions! I could do them all day every day! I have taken many classes and continue to educate myself to ensure all my girls are getting the best, most high quality extension and blonde services they can! I am so passionate about getting my blondes to their dream hair, but I also like to be realistic- I want your hair to stay healthy and that is my main priority. I would rather it take 3 appointments to get you to your dream hair while keeping your hair healthy and growing than severely damaging it and getting you there in one session.
I am most proud of the spot I am in at my age. Being 20 years old with a full clientele and co owning a salon is not for the weak but is worth every single second and dollar I put into it- I wouldn’t change it for the world!!! I feel like it is so rare to even know what you want to do when you are this young, much less to own a business and have amazing co workers to surround myself with every day I go to work!
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is to be patient with yourself. It is so easy to start a new job and just expect to be amazing at everything you do the first time you do it. In all reality, that is not realistic and never going to happen!!!! Every job or skill takes time to learn and get comfortable with, even to this day I still make mistakes and that’s okay!!!!! I am human and we are all learning day by day! Be patient with yourself and give yourself grace!
