Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimoya Walker.
Hi Kimoya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up, I was always known as the photographer in my family. I was born and raised in Jamaica, and some of my earliest memories are of walking around the island, capturing its beauty on my phone. The photos were low quality, but they meant something to me and my family began to notice. Whenever they needed casual photos, they’d ask me to take them. At the time, I didn’t even know photography could be a career; I simply treated it as a passion I loved.
Everything changed when we moved to the United States. I started discovering photographers on social media, and for the first time, I realized that this thing I loved could actually become something more, a real career. I was immediately drawn to that possibility. I began researching my first camera, and I still remember the day my parents took me to Best Buy and bought me a Canon Rebel T6. I was so excited, but when I got home and tried to use it, I was completely overwhelmed. I thought I’d be able to take great photos right away, but I had no idea how any of it worked. I felt discouraged, knowing I had a huge learning curve ahead, but I was also incredibly determined to figure it out.
Eventually, I learned the basics of using my camera and thought, “Okay, I’ve got this now. I can finally be a photographer.” Then I realized I had to edit the photos too. I downloaded Lightroom for the first time and instantly felt lost. I actually cried that day because it felt like yet another mountain to climb. But I didn’t give up. I turned to YouTube and watched countless tutorials until things started to make sense to me.
Since then, I’ve come such a long way, not just as a photographer, but as an artist. If it weren’t for my determination, grit, and most of all, God’s help, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Photography was my first love in art. It was the door that opened me up to exploring other creative paths like graphic design and videography, and it continues to be the foundation of my creative journey.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, not at all. Even after pushing through the technical learning curves that come with being a photographer, like understanding camera settings and editing, I quickly realized that knowing how to take beautiful photos was just one part of the equation. The hardest part for me has honestly been the business side of things.
Turning a passion into something sustainable is not easy. There’s so much that goes into running a photography business beyond just showing up and shooting, things like marketing, pricing your services, keeping up with clients, delivering work on time, and more. I had to learn how to be not just a photographer, but also a business owner, and that came with a lot of trial and error.
Social media has also played a huge role in that journey. It’s such a powerful tool for growth and visibility, but it can be overwhelming. Learning how to market myself online, stay consistent, and show up authentically without burning out has been a constant challenge. There were moments where I questioned if I was cut out for this, especially when things felt slow or when comparison crept in.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a portrait, couple, brand, and event photographer based in Atlanta, Georgia, specializing in storytelling and documentary-style imagery. I’m a follower of Jesus and a lover of people, and I like to say I’m loving Jesus and people with a camera in hand.
What sets me apart is that I see photography as more than just taking pictures—it’s a way to glorify God and serve others. I care deeply about making people feel seen, valued, and loved through every image I create. I’m most proud of staying true to that purpose while continuing to grow as both an artist and a person.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that you won’t know what’s on the other side unless you keep going. It’s less of a lesson and more of a reminder I have to hold onto, especially when things get hard. There have been many moments where I felt stuck, unsure, or discouraged, but I’ve learned to keep showing up anyway. Sometimes the breakthrough or opportunity is just on the other side of consistency. I may not always see the full picture, but I’ve learned that beautiful things can happen when you keep going just to see what could be.
