Today we’d like to introduce you to Oren Bar.
Hi Oren, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a staff physical therapist in Lafayette, Louisiana working in an outpatient setting. I noticed that my results were pretty good for most patients, but when it came to treating CHRONIC PAIN, most of what I was doing had only temporary benefits for the patients. My colleagues confirmed that they were having similar results with these patients and actually found them very frustrating to work with for that reason. I kept thinking that there must be something that we are missing that could help these individuals who suffer from daily pain for months or sometimes years on end. I stumbled upon the AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM as a possible missing component of the puzzle. This was in 2003. I have since dedicated my career to helping patients in chronic pain. I moved to Atlanta in 2006 in order to open a clinic which treats this patient population. The technique I developed is called ABBRA (Autonomic Brain-Body Release Approach) and the clinic I opened is called RebalANSing Health which has been at its Buckhead location since 2008.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The clinic I worked for in Louisiana was owned by some doctors and a couple of businessmen. When I started using the ABBRA system with my patients my results were much better. Not only were the patients reporting less pain and more function, the results were holding. After 5 or 6 visits patients were reporting feeling well enough to stop coming for therapy. I was discharging patients because they no longer needed physical therapy but this did not go unnoticed. I was summoned into the boss’ office to explain why I was discharging patients after just a few sessions. When I explained that my new techniques get much better results in less time I was told to go back to using the old techniques. Of course I could not do that in good conscience, so I decided to leave and start my own practice. Then Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit which encouraged me to move to Atlanta. It was a difficult decision because I did not know any patients or doctors in Atlanta. In fact, I did not know anyone in Atlanta. All I had was the faith in my system of treatment because I had seen how it had changed the lives of the patients I had treated in Lafayette.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about RebalANSing Health, LLC?
My physical therapy practice is very different to most PT offices:
There is no gym, no exercise equipment.
There are no modalities: no ultrasound machines, no e-stim machines, no hot packs, no cold packs.
There are no PT assistants, no PT techs,
There is no staff other than me: patients are never handed over to another therapist nor to any student, intern, or assistant.
I do not work with any insurance companies – My contract is only with the patient.
I use manual therapy techniques and I only see one patient at a time.
I specialize in the treatment of chronic pain including headaches, jaw pain, pain in the neck, back, shoulders, arms, hands, hips, knees, feet, etc. I treat conditions such as fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s, carpal tunnel, plantar fasciitis, ptsd, migraines, etc.
What makes me most proud is when patients contact me, after months or years of not seeing them, to let me know that they are still painfree and enjoying their lives.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I took a big risk by moving to Atlanta. I opened a clinic by myself, using a system nobody had heard of. I did not know any doctors here who could refer patients to me. I did not have an established list of patients who already knew me and what I could do for them. In fact, I did not even know where to locate the practice in Atlanta. To mitigate the risk I joined a home health company. For a year I drove around from patient to patient spanning a large geographical area including Atlanta, Marietta, Roswell, Alpharetta, Cumming and Lake Lanier. While treating the patients I would ask them where I should buy a house, which schools would be good for my daughter and where I should open my clinic. The consensus was to set up a clinic in Buckhead, which is exactly what I did.
