Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Fayer.
Laura, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My work is inspired by Japanese aesthetics and design and sustained by a love of discovery and innovation. I lived in Japan for a few years as a child and was attracted to the concepts of open yet energized space, rustic beauty, elegance, economy of means, simplicity, grace and natural form.
My goal is always to be innovative with materials and techniques and to consider every piece a unique challenge.
I started to paint seriously in my 20’s, and later graduated with an MFA from Hunter College (City University of New York). I have also participated in many art residency programs, including MacDowell, Yaddo, the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, and Triangle France in Marseille.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I create paintings with layers of acrylic paint interspersed with thin collaged papers printed with my own designs, using printmaking tools I have developed over many years. I’m inspired by things I see in my daily life; whether it be a simple object, a landscape, or a visually compelling moment I see while on the train or walking in the city.
I hope people come away from viewing my paintings with a sense of calm energy and a feeling of fulfillment, but with a longing for more.
How can artists connect with other artists?
My advice is to identify what is important to you, continue to develop your ideas, become skilled in the techniques that you need to achieve your unique vision, and don’t be afraid of making mistakes in the studio. Sometimes the process of recovering from those mistakes affords us the opportunity to make our best, most groundbreaking work.
Surround yourself with friends, other artists and supporters. Find your community. Staying connected keeps me centered and happy as an artist and allows me to take advantage of opportunities for networking and collaboration.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My work is exhibited at Thomas Deans Fine Art in Atlanta and at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in New York City. People can support my work by attending my shows, or by following my Instagram account (laurafayer). Thomas Deans Fine Art, one of Atlanta’s finest galleries, now celebrating it’s 35th year, specializes in modern and contemporary paintings, contemporary and historic works on paper as well as photography and sculpture. We would also like to include a small bit about Laura’s upcoming show in the gallery. The exhibition will be called: Odyssey; a 35 year journey. It will showcase European painter Christopher LeBrun, California artist Sam Nejati, New York artist Laura Fayer and Southern artist Carlton Nell. International meets Regional meets Local. It will be on view from September 7th-October 8th. Opening Reception will be Friday, September 7th, 5-8 PM.
