Art & Life with Jenny Perry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Perry.

Jenny, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
As a child, I went through countless disposable cameras capturing my days with friends. At the end of each school year, I would develop the film (with doubles of course!) and make a collage of all of my favorite photos on a giant poster. I loved documenting life and how I could remember so many more details about a day just by looking at a photo. I lost a dear friend in 2003 to cancer, and the photos I have of him were some of my most cherished possessions. That experience made me realize that photos aren’t just a picture, but a treasured memory to hold dear, especially when you lose loved ones.

I had always wanted an SLR but the cost just wasn’t feasible for me during childhood and college. I wasn’t able to afford a “nice” camera until I married my husband in 2010 and we had some money left over from our wedding budget. He encouraged me to pursue my lifelong dream of learning how to use a DSLR. After purchasing my camera, I took several local photography classes which taught me how to shoot in manual and then more classes on portrait photography which was my real passion. I practiced on friends and family to improve my skills and read as much as I could about all things photography related. Very organically, it began turning into a side business, and eventually became my main career focus.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a natural light lifestyle portrait photographer focusing on newborn, child and family photography. I love light, bright, happy images that convey a connection between family members. My photography has always focused on family and children, but after becoming a mom over four years ago, it began to take on even more meaning. I’ve always enjoyed being around children and the lightness they can bring to any situation. I make it my mission as a photographer to get a natural smile out of the children and families I photograph. My goal is to provide family heirloom photographs that can be displayed in my client’s home and passed down for generations. My true inspiration is finding the love and light in every situation. I feel with each passing day that our world feels more overwhelming and gloomy, and my hope is to make photos that make people smile when they see them… that for a moment, they take every other ounce of anxiety and stress away and just make them happy.

What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
Yes! I was very lonely as an artist when we lived in Charleston, SC. But after moving to Atlanta 3 years ago I found NAPCP, which provided a local community for child and family photographers. It has been incredible to find an entire community of artists doing exactly what I do and having that support. There’s very little feeling of competition, and more of a community of camaraderie and encouragement.
In addition to NAPCP, I’ve really enjoyed attending Trigger Happy monthly meetings and the Shoot Proof online forum for advice and support.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
People can see my work:

– on my Instagram page at https://www.instagram.com/jennyperryphotography/
– on my website at www.jennyperryphotography.com
– on my Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/JennyPerryPhotography

People support my work by continuing to hire me to do beautiful family and newborn sessions. I’m so fortunate that I’ve been able to make this, once side business, my 20-30 hour a week career (the rest of my time is spent wrangling my two boys).
