Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanvi Gadiraju.
Hi Tanvi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have ALWAYS been creating content for as long as I can remember. No, seriously! As early as elementary school! During middle school years, I started to get really into YouTube, fashion & makeup which was easy to make videos of. I have hundreds of videos saved on our old windows laptops of doing makeup tutorials, giving school advice, how to decorate lockers, what to wear to school and even a slight obsession with making friendship bracelets. I never posted anything because my parents didn’t feel comfortable because of my age so I would post on FaceBooks and I got extremely bullied which discouraged me from posting. That didn’t stop me though, I would always record and edit but never post it anywhere! During high school, I was highly engaged on twitter creating 1D edits and fanfics which tapped into my creative side. I took content creation seriously end of college because at that point in my life, I stopped caring what others thought and I wanted to finally chase after my dreams. Now, here I am, absolutely living the dream! I am able to work with dream brands and get amazing opportunities constantly and I know the little girl in me is so proud!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road. In my early days, I definitely wasn’t sure what my niche was and I was so focused on making my content look like others that I didn’t allow myself to actually figure out who I am and what I was into. I still struggle with this here and there but I believe that’s the beauty of being a human. We go through so many phases of our lives that it’s okay if your content is constantly changing because at least you are being true to yourself! I have been doing this for almost 5 years and I still am learning the ropes. Social media is constantly changing so it’s easy to get lost with what society wants you to create. At the end of the day, I am doing this because it makes me happy so I am not so focused on what others want me to do.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Whenever I am not setting up a camera and hitting record, I am sitting in a corporate office, working as a Risk Analyst from 9-5 everyday. I specifically work in Risk, Audit & Compliance. I actually never imagined I would be in this field. I really thought I would be attending law school and/or going into fashion. Law school felt a lot towards the end of college and I wasn’t prepared to study even more and fashion didn’t seem feasible in that moment. It’s a risky move which I wasn’t able to make in that point in my life. Ultimately, I was always interested in Risk Management/Cybersecurity which helped me land a job in that exact area. I am sooo grateful for the job that I have because I absolutely love it and my company. I love that I can have varying skills. Whenever I feel burnt out at my 9-5, I have my social media hobby that lets me be creative. Thankfully, I am doing great at what I do and will continue to excel in my career.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
There will NEVER be a perfect time. If you’re sitting idle and looking for a perfect time to pick up a hobby or post that video you have saved in your drafts, you never will. I’ve learned that trial and error will be your best friend. I have posted so many videos where I worked so hard on only for them to fail and others that took less than 5 mins to go viral. But that’s where you learn from your results. You can find out what you like to post, what you don’t, what your audience is interested in and what editing style works well. If you’re just afraid, then you will never be able to move forward in life.
