Ferg Berserk shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Ferg, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I started kickboxing a few weeks back, and that’s been so amazing for me. I had struggled to be consistent in the gym all throughout college, but after I graduated, I started really prioritizing my health. I figured that a good way to stay active was to reconnect with an old passion of mine. I’ve trained in combat sports really all my life. Funny enough, before music, I actually wanted to be an MMA fighter. But yeah, kickboxing training has been very fulfilling, and it brings me a lot of joy to not only watch myself grow, but also to feel connected to a younger version of myself.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Ferg Berserk and I’m a RapMetal artist from Atlanta, GA. I’d describe my music as primarily a blend of Dirty South HipHop, Hardcore, and Deathcore. I also love performing my music live. That’s one of the most fulfilling parts about what I do.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
This is an interesting one: I’d say avoidance/detachment. I went through a lot in my childhood, and somewhere I developed a tendency to distance myself from my emotions and situations that caused me a lot of stress. I think it served a purpose at a point by keeping me focused on other goals, but it also caused a lot of harm to me and the people I care about. Over the past few years, and primarily thanks to my music, I’ve begun to let go of that habit of mine and embrace a lot of the difficult emotions I hold. I think emotions tell us valuable information about ourselves and others, and it’s important to listen to them.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
When I became Ferg Berserk. I realized that I wasn’t creating the type of music I wanted to make because I was so detached from who I really was. And honestly, after some soul searching, I found a lot of hurt and anger that needed a voice. Anger can often be difficult to manage, but it’s one of the strongest feelings that we have. It’s the motivation we often need to change something. So I chose to put my anger in my music, and I feel that has changed me for the better.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
It’s hard for me to tell a lot of the time. I really am that crazy guy who likes to scream and jump through chairs, but I’m honestly pretty shy in person. I feel as though the main thing that everyone can perceive about me is that I’m very passionate about what I do, whether it be my music or anything else. I never know what people really think about me, but I try to show up as authentically as I can wherever I am. If nothing else, I hope I send that message out to people.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Music hahaha! At least financially, this industry requires a lot of early investment, and it can take a long time to see it pay off. Still, it’s worth it.
