Story & Lesson Highlights with Selena Lightfoot

Selena Lightfoot shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Selena, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I’m most proud of building my foundation and my legacy to leave behind for my family and the next generation when it’s time for me to pass away, nobody sees this sometimes I don’t see it as well because to me it’s very small right now, but I know if I continue to put in the work and continue to strive for the things that I need to do it will become bigger and better than what I thought it would be !

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Selena Lightfoot I’m an inspiring indie artist, I’m also an inspiring entrepreneur my business is a woman’s clothing line. I’ve been independently releasing my music for three years now. when I first started music I tried to jump right into entrepreneurship independently without working a 9-5 not thinking that things do not just come in a snap of a finger. I had to snap back and into reality and realize I can juggle between the two a 9 to 5 and working on my dreams and goals at the same time ! Don’t get me wrong. It has been hard trying to juggle the two, but I was told you have to put in the same amount of work you put in your 9 to 5 towards yourself as well! My business is prettyyoungthangz collection although it is a small business now I don’t let that stop me from continuing to work towards it and building it up. My business is based off clothing for women and I chose the name pretty young thangz because my senior year in high school I had decided to change my Instagram name to pyt Lena. My senior year was the year when I started to feel confident and feel as if I was growing into a pretty young female so after I graduated and was trying to contemplate on a brand name for my business, that’s when it came to me pretty young thang because I also wanted the name to represent me and instead of “thing” I chose “thang” because I’m from the south and I wanted it to be a little different. Right now, musically wise I am working on trying to find my sound my last single was dropped in April “It’s your birthday (Go Shawty)” I dropped it on my birthday the best present I gave myself ! So you just have to be on the look out for my music because you never know when I’m going to drop just know it’ll be more in the future. Business wise I have started my own clothing line, this year I will be continuing the clothing line, but it’s usually based in the fall and winter time I will also be adding a little more to the collection and I can’t wait to show the world what is in store!

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The relationship that most shaped how I see myself is the relationship that I have with myself. I’m very big on self love. I am relearning who I am and what I want in life. The biggest thing that I am realizing the older you get the more you start to outgrow certain things in life you will also experience growing pains learning to outgrow those things in life.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There has been plenty of times of me thinking about giving up times where I wanted to delete all my music and just give it up times when I wanted to delete the business page and say forget it. When I get to that point, I just started looking back from the very beginning from when I first started and realizing how far I have came and the work I have put into my craft. I honestly thought about giving up music because I I felt as if no one is listening to me and because of my style of music, but my last studio session my producer told me don’t just make music for other people you have to make music for yourself and that has stuck with me ever since I’ve been told that. Now I feel like I can’t give up because all the work I’ve put into myself would just be a waste.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say what really matters to me is my morals in life If I have a goal I want to accomplish. I’m going to do everything I can to accomplish it. Once I set my mind to something rather it’s big or small there’s no stopping me until it’s done.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What light inside you have you been dimming?
The light inside me I have been dimming is my potential. I can say I honestly haven’t put my potential to its furthest peak as I should. I tend to procrastinate and doubt myself which is something I have to work on myself in the future. I know if I use my potential to the fullest it will get me far. I’ve been told plenty of times I have the potential to take myself as far as I want to go but I have to believe in myself first before someone else can.
