Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlo Meyerhofer.
Hi Marlo, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Backbends and Brews LLC, founded in 2017, began as a unique blend of yoga and philanthropy in a cozy basement setting. The journey started with intimate yoga classes followed by “brew time,” where participants sipped on home-brewed kombucha and discussed donations for various charities, fostering a sense of community. As the vision and community grew, Backbends and Brews expanded to acworth parks & community center and beyond offering classes, events, workshops, mentoring, and retreats, all focused on spreading wellness and connection. The company evolved to support new businesses hosting classes in their spaces and also, by promoting wellness programs for employees in corporate offices, enhancing workplace health and morale. Recently, Backbends and Brews has partnered with local vendors to host wellness market events paired with yoga. Other innovative offerings include Paddleboard Yoga and Adult Jazz Groove with Amanda Valentino. Through these efforts, the company has cultivated a vibrant community of individuals passionate about yoga, wellness, and giving back to those in need, creating a lasting impact through movement and generosity and helping to “brew peace” within ourselves and those we encounter.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have had lots of ideas and trial and error. Sometimes you just have to jump in and try different things to see if they are a good fit. We have put together offerings that sometimes don’t succeed. But, listening, learning and adapting to clients have helped figure out the right fit for what people are looking for. For example, we have had to change different class times, or the types of offerings at different locations to meet the needs of the community. There are times when we have been discouraged by low attendance but, ultimately prayer, perseverance & patience work. 🙂
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My journey with Backbends and Brews beautifully weaves together my lifelong passion for movement and wellness. Growing up with a Physical Education teacher for a mother, my foundation in gymnastics, then dance made me develop an early love for physical expression and body awareness. This passion carried me into the medical field where I ended up consulting with patients and physicians receiving vertebroplasty procedures to fill in spinal fractures. This time deepened my understanding and love of anatomy and the critical role of movement and flexibility in longevity. Discovering yoga became a pivotal moment, igniting a love that would shape my path forward. Inspired by my fascination with anatomy, I pursued yoga training, blending functional movements, Pilates movements, dance and gymnastics to create a unique teaching style. I am most proud of the wonderful, kind, generous friends that come together to practice, learn, help support and bring awareness to our various charities each month. None of this would be here without them!
How do you think about luck?
I believe in prayer during the easy and stressful times. Spending time with God in nature has helped me when I am not sure what direction to head next or am feeling discouraged. When I start thinking too selfishly about the business, things tend to not go as well. When my focus shifts to ways to serve others, things always change in a positive way. Faith and listening has helped become aware of the most amazing people and causes to partner with. Together we have been able to participate in fantastic ideas, events, charities and community.
