Story & Lesson Highlights with April Priism of Woodstock

We recently had the chance to connect with April Priism and have shared our conversation below.

Hi April, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
I lose track of time when I’m in the midst of a creative wave. Working in the studio with a client brings me presence that is unparalleled. Working in the design phase leading up to the moment of tattoo, I lose time when I am in tune with the moment. Listening to my client’s ideas and inspiration as we blend through the palette of color. As the details are woven together, the vision becomes more clear. Structure, form and movement make the setting for discovery to occur. It’s in this moment I come back to my place of center, regaining the initial vision in its final forms. The final touches added, and the session comes to an end. My client and I sharing smiles and last moments of laughter together. I am here, now. Looking to be lost again.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am April Priism, a tattoo artist at Buddha Brother Ink in Woodstock Georgia. However, I am fluent in other mediums such as acrylic paintings, murals, and children’s face painting at social functions. My diversity creates opportunities for immense growth and expression across all art forms. As a tattoo artist I work intimately with my clients, collaborating ideas to conceptualize their dreams. Through references and stories told I gain inspiration for my designs. Each one unique to the person it was created for expressing their memories and reminders of the journey. It’s an honor to be trusted with such special moments in people’s lives as an artist. As your ideas unfold, I am able to grasp a larger picture of potentials, and my clients return with “It’s better than what I wanted” A gift of vision always seems to walk in the door right on time.
These moments are the epicenters for my drive to continue to push barriers of what is possible as an artist. And what this industry of tattoo was built upon.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
A not so long time ago, I believed that all life was made of a magic that somehow held the universe together. Designed in dewdrop on a blade of grass, camouflaged as moment of smiles shared with a friend. I explored the world around me, and found myself to make monumental discoveries. I was adventuring, an appetite for experience. I built castles out of dead trees, and swam miles through one creek. Each moment slipping away faster than I could understand. And each moment finding myself in the place I stand, in awe of the sky above me. A rhythm of my heart crested music in my ears, the current of life flowing through me. I danced with my shadow and played in the wind. The world carried me away, and overtook my dreams. I imagined grandiose things. Mountains, giants, machines. Entities and animals interacting together in such a way. Where rain washed the past away, and the moon sang me to sleep.
I was unafraid of anything, ready for what the day would bring me

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
When I gave myself clarity and a mindful practice a few years ago, I didn’t realize how much those moments would catalyze the future success I would have. I became introspective and explored my thoughts, feelings and crevasses of my mind, rooting back to the source within. The path I had walked to this place was one that was filled with challenges and trials. All of which having a large soul lesson that I would learn only in time, that the suffering that I had experienced ultimately brought me to a point where I no longer felt resentful but inspired. This awareness gave me a push that is now my power. My dedication for my craft has excelled, beyond expectations. Fueled by the past, looking forward to making new mistakes and learning from them. Every moment I encounter is an opportunity to be inspired

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
I’ve strived my entire lifetime to create an existence in which I feel in complete alignment with values. Rather than having two personas I am a vessel for art to be created. I aim to provide a consistent embodiment of integrity, patience and diligence in my public presence. I believe that by remaining in one continuous state of being I am able to give my authentic expression to all those I share my craft with.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I have a tool in my hand. Whether that is a brush, pencil, stylus or machine. When I have a blank canvas set before me, I can see endless possibilities. Visions dancing like ribbons through my consciousness, this moment before I mark the canvas holds the magic. Streaming thoughts of creating, coding into a matrix of reference. The sensation in incomparable, it is here, in this moment I am at peace.
