An Inspired Chat with Gregory Johnson of Edgewood

We recently had the chance to connect with Gregory Johnson and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Gregory, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Something that makes me lose track of time is simply creating. No matter the media, where I’m at or what time it is. When I’m creating, that’s when i feel the most focused. I get so lost in the art and excited about what I’m creating. I just get so eager to see the end results. It always feels like I’m doing what i was put on this Earth for. Like it’s absolutely my purpose here.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a painter, illustrator, photographer and model from Atlanta. I have been drawing my whole life. I still have artwork from kindergarten haha and I’ve been painting and doing photography for 8 years. My mother bought my first paint set for Christmas and I’ve been painting ever since. Before i got my first job, I didn’t have money to buy canvases so i painted/ drew on whatever i had and it was at that point i realized everything around me was designed by someone and i can put my own touch on anything. I can design anything

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
The earliest memory that made me feel powerful was in elementary school. I had 3 best friends and we all were very talented artists for our age. We always made alot of art at home and would critique it whenever we brought the work to school. I’ve brought work that was heavily criticized by my peers. But one day i brought one of the best drawings i had ever done at the time and everyone including my pals loved it and it felt amazing. I felt like the top artist in the world haha and i knew at that point, that this was a feeling i wanted forever with my art.

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
Whenever i felt down, art was always there for me. When I created something amazing, I enjoyed the hype and the love I would receive from people when they would see my work. Even until this day I enjoy seeing people smile and get excited about my art.😊 Most importantly I love the way Art makes me feel about myself.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
I love philosophy. I rely on ideas that come from all religions and philosophies. I believe there are soooo many valuable lessons that come from them and they’ve all helped me figure out life in some way.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel the most at peace when I’m creating or meditating. It doesn’t matter what I’m going through or what had occurred. When i make something so beautiful or clear my mind. I get a feeling of clarity/peace.
