Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Kalun Brown

We recently had the chance to connect with Kalun Brown and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Kalun, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Have you ever been glad you didn’t act fast?
Most certainly! This most recent project I am gearing up to drop is a prime example of me not acting fast on my process as an artis. As a independent artist with no budget I use to find myself feeling like I had to rush and fast track my process to keep up, but I am starting to notice that taking my time is more beneficial in so many ways. I finally feel like I am starting to find my true creative flow when it comes to doing things my way and I love it.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kalun Duwan Brown, and I am from a small country town in Georgia called Attapulgus. I was born in Valdosta and moved to Attapulgus not too long after I was born. I grew up around music due to my dad and his side of the family being well endowed in music. My grandfather was a DJ, my dad was a producer, engineer, and rapper, and then my oldest sister is a singer/songwriter as well so it just runs in the family. I would say my brand is unique due to the fact that you can’t pinpoint who or what I sound like right away. I really made that a emphasis on my journey as a producer and artist. I wanted to stand out from the crowd and remain myself. I have been working on my latest ep, “THE CALM,” which is the finale to my storm ep series that catapulted my career as a artist. I’m thinking of a early fall release, so I just want everybody to be on the lookout!

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My parents easily saw who I was before I could see it for myself. They empowered me to be the man that I am today. The lessons I have learned from them have been so instrumental in my journey, and I couldn’t ask for nothing more but their words and advice. I feel as if we all at times take for granted the words that people speak to us and about us. Having people in my corner that love and support me unconditionally has been such a help.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of failure. I’ve always had this thing of wanting to be perfect. I always felt like that everything must be perfect in order to do it. I just now recently came to accept the fact that nothing in this world is going to be perfect. We all are flawed in our own ways, and we as people must use those flaws to better ourselves each and every day. It is never about being perfect, but it’s about getting better everyday!

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Very much so! I am extremely shy and introverted. I am learning to every now and then come out of that shell due to networking, meeting new people, and taking on new opportunities. My pops always told me to keep true to myself, so I could never knowingly give the public a false perception of me and expect them to have a deep and personal connection with me when it comes to my music.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop seeking acceptance from others so much. I’ve learned to not depend on the opinion of others so much lately. Being in the music industry can take a toll on you mentally. You feel like you have to listen to everybody else and do what they say so that you’re accepted. I ran into this problem early on which made me question my own judgement. Once I got out of that mindset I started to see my own creative ideas just flow so naturally.
