We recently had the chance to connect with Tata Lawo and have shared our conversation below.
Tata , so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I believe the most common misunderstanding about my work is the idea that it’s easy or that it functions like a genie in a bottle—that you can simply rub the bottle and make a wish, or light a candle and make a wish, and expect results without faith.
There’s a lot of colonial misconception and taboo around it, and people are often fearful. Some even equate it with devil worship, and I want to be very clear: it is not devil worship, and it is not evil. It has nothing to do with anything sinister.
Instead, this work has everything to do with:
– Being one with nature.
– Honoring those that have came before you to pave the way.
– Honoring the ancestors as well as living elders.
– Respecting the divine feminine and the divine masculine balance.
– And living life in harmony.
Ultimately, it’s about finding and following your destiny and living a purpose-driven life. I’m working for the healing of humanity and the sustainability of the earth. It’s the work of ancestral readings and rituals—it’s a science. It’s about helping people clear their path and navigate challenges with resilience. That is what is most often misunderstood.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Tata Baba Wodaabe Lawo, a.k.a. Lex Lavoe.
I was introduced to spirituality at a very young age. I was brought up in a Spiritualist church as well as nondenominational churches. My gift of intuitive readings also began during my childhood.
I was initiated into African spirituality in 2000 by my dearly departed Godfather, Baba Chief Bolu Fatamise.
I think what makes me different is that I teach universal principles in regards to spirituality, because we each have something to learn from one another. While some people in this field look to indoctrinate people, I look to show people that there are similarities in all forms of spirituality and that no form of spirituality is better than any other.
The work itself is working for the people, working for humanity. It’s the work of ancestral readings and rituals. One of my slogans is “Clear your path.” It’s about helping you get into alignment with your destiny, to remove obstacles, or to find a way to go around or through them. It’s about building resiliency, because life isn’t always easy and you’re going to have challenges. My work is about navigating through those challenges.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
That would be my seventh-grade teacher. She was a very good teacher who cared for her students.
One day, she corrected me for doing something that children do, like talking or playing around. I looked at her and I heard as clear as day: “She just mad cause she had a fight with her husband last night.”
And I said that out loud.
She told me to get out of her class and called my mother and told her what I said. But she knew—and I knew—that there was absolutely no way I could have known that. In that moment, she saw this gift in me clearly, long before I fully understood it myself.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
The defining wounds of my life came from betrayal from those who I loved the most, those I trusted the most. Overcoming that, along with navigating childhood trauma, were the pivotal struggles.
I speak on this because I believe who better to serve people in that way than someone who has experienced it and has navigated those challenges in their own life? It allows me to support others not just sympathetically, but empathetically.
The most challenging moments of my life, so to speak, came when people closest to me betrayed me. Healing from that has been a core part of my journey and my resilience.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies is that this path is a way to become powerful, fashionable, or cool—that it’s something you can just choose to be to set yourself apart.
What people don’t realize is that this isn’t about personal gain or being seen. It’s a responsibility. There are spiritual ramifications to certain things that many aren’t prepared for. The true priests, priestesses, and seers don’t act like that amongst the people.
Many who are drawn to this now want to be adored and powerful, but they don’t understand the weight of it. This path often requires sacrifice and can be very lonely. You have to be able to tune out the world to tune into the people you’re meant to help. The lie is that it’s about the spotlight, when in truth, it’s about the service.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel the most peace when I am in nature.
It’s when I’m sitting by a body of water or in the woods. That’s when I feel at my most peak. In those moments, I feel a deep oneness with the divine mother and the divine father.
I also feel that profound peace when I am doing what I was born to do. There’s a certainty in it; I know this is what I was born for. That alignment brings me a deep and lasting sense of peace.
