Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Ebony McQueen of Montgomery

Ebony McQueen shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Ebony, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
Many people think hairstyling is just a quick service, but for me, it’s ministry in motion. My business isn’t about running clients in and out—it’s about creating space for women to feel seen, celebrated, and renewed. When I color or style hair, I’m not just changing looks, I’m changing how someone shows up in the world. That depth is often misunderstood, but it’s what makes my work powerful.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Ebony, founder of KolorQueen Kreations, a brand built on artistry, empowerment, and self-expression. For over a decade, I’ve specialized in creative color and healthy hair care, blending technical skill with a personal touch. My work is about more than changing hairstyles—it’s about helping people see themselves in a new light. KolorQueen Kreations represents resilience, creativity, and the belief that every crown deserves to shine. Right now, I’m expanding my brand beyond the salon, offering classes, branded products, and content that educates, uplifts, and inspires.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The part of me that I’m releasing is the belief that my business has to look like everyone else’s to be successful. For years, I thought following trends or playing it safe would bring growth, but I’ve realized my true gift is in creating something different. I’m letting go of comparison and embracing the fact that my brand thrives because of its uniqueness, not despite it.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
A defining wound for me was feeling unseen and underestimated—both in life and in business. There were seasons where I gave my all and still felt overlooked, as if my crown wasn’t worthy of recognition. But instead of breaking me, that pain pushed me to create my own lane. KolorQueen Kreations was born from those wounds, and healing came through turning my struggles into art, education, and empowerment for others. Now, I don’t wait to be seen—I stand tall and shine.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
A huge lie in my industry is that hairstylists are ‘just doing hair’ and that the work we do isn’t worth real investment. The truth? Behind every color, cut, or style is years of education, science, artistry, and emotional labor. The industry sometimes minimizes the role of stylists, but we’re more than service providers—we’re healers, therapists, and creators. We hold space for people’s deepest insecurities and biggest transformations.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What light inside you have you been dimming?
The light I’ve been dimming is my voice. For too long, I played it safe—thinking I had to tone down my truth, my creativity, and even my vision to make others comfortable. But my legacy can’t be built on silence. My light is meant to shine loudly, to spark confidence in others, and to remind every woman who sits in my chair that she doesn’t have to shrink either.
