Thaminah Poitier of Norcross, Ga on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Thaminah Poitier shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Thaminah, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I have rekindled my love for reading. I was an avid reader growing up, but the interest waned during my college years. Now, I am able to find time to read and it is growing into a slight obsession.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Assalamu alaykum! My name is Thaminah and I am a curly hair specialist working out of Georgia. My passion has been healthy, manageable curls for everyone since becoming a licensed stylist a decade ago. Right now, I have joined Curltured Hair Studios to help bring this mindset to as many people as possible. Currently, I am just working on enjoying my wonderful clients that have transitioned with me as life happens.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I believed that I could never advocate for myself. I would always have to wait for someone to do it for me. After some major life lessons in high school, I realized that I not only have the power to stand up and advocate for what I want, I am the only person I can trust with such a responsibility.

Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
I really miss the girl I was before going through Hurricane Katrina. I miss the opportunity to see the woman I could have been, if I could have stayed in my city of birth New Orleans. Over the years, I have made my peace with the unknown, but there are still days I cry for her.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I definitely feel like the beauty industry pushes the narrative of ‘one-size fits all’ whether it comes to haircare, skincare, or makeup way too much. It is always so painful to educate someone that just because this product does not work like the marketing promised, that it does mean there is no other options!

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
My ability to stand on my own with a level of strength, faith, and confidence that makes those around me feel it as well.
