Story & Lesson Highlights with Shaquin Thomas of McDonough

Shaquin Thomas shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Shaquin, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I’m a busy mother of three so a normal day for me is cooking breakfast and dinner simultaneously, dropping the kids off at school, running errands and serving my clients, then picking kids up and shuffling them to 3 different sports. Life of a mom!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Shaquin Thomas is the CEO and owner of Soul To Table Catering. She is a personal chef and event planner. In addition to serving food, she also selflessly serves her community. Hence the name; Soul To Table. Her accomplishments include being an author of two published cookbooks, Cooking with Soul To Table and Soul To Table Soup which is available on Amazon. Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was when I would work various jobs from tax preparation to banking to accounting and I would be new but after working at these places for a few weeks, I would create a new process on how to make my job more efficient. I would come up with ideas effortlessly. It was when I realized I was meant to be an entrepreneur.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
When my business started to slow up during the pandemic, I started to give but I remembered my resilience during the day my father was transitioning. I was cooking food for 200 people and my father was taking his last breaths over the course of 4 hours. I never stopped that day and I finished the food and was able to tell my father goodbye. Anytime I want to quit, I channel that same energy from that tough time

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I would love to have a soup kitchen one day. I want to have enough funds to cook for the homeless and personally serve them meals daily

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
My customers would miss my food that is cooked with love. They would miss the conversations we share and how we can relate and break bread over my delicious meals
