We’re looking forward to introducing you to Tad Murdock. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Tad, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I would like to think wandering, but have the notion that wandering is just the inability to see the path you’re on.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a fly fishing guide here in North Georgia. I teach people about our trout streams and local ecology. My personal hobby has taken me around the world in search of the many salmonid species (trout, char, salmon) which will culminate in a book this year. I have also created a website for fishing tourism around the world that promotes many lesser discussed fisheries and the local people that protect them. The goal for that website is to encourage more worldwide fishing tourism and use any proceeds to protect the local trout streams and fisheries that need added conservation efforts.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Leaving the normal job market (9-5 Monday through Friday) to start my own business changed my perspective on myself and the world.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering has taught me that the time spent suffering is an option and not obligatory to life. We can choose to dwell in pain at rock bottom, or we can choose to look ahead to see that it’s all uphill from here.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
That teaching kids and young anglers about fishing is very important to me, and that it’s less about the actual fishing and more about engaging with the outdoors and a conduit to learning about ourselves and the planet.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
When traveling to new places/trout streams and being able to learn about the history, geology, and cultural dynamics of the area.
