We recently had the chance to connect with Nicole R. Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Nicole R., we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Who are you learning from right now?
Alyssa Cotten! She has really opened my mind up to what’s possible as a business owner when you give your nervous system time to reset.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Ruth Nathan’s was founded with an inspiration to share my love of colors/patterns and the joy it brings to the world. I’ve been a designer all my life! I understand the power of feeling confident in your clothes; what better way to refresh an outfit than to adorn yourself in curated, unique pieces?
Ruth Nathan’s is dedicated to transforming the world one dapper ensemble at a time. I serve Urban Peacocks who love exclusive bow ties, pocket squares, and luxury lapel flowers.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That if I am a “good girl” then everything would work out my way. I had to unlearn people-pleasing and learn to live as my authentic self. Being pleasant is great but not at the expense of diminishing my gifts, talents and well being.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t worry if others tease you for your dreams…they’re just jealous that they are living someone else’s dreams. Be proud that you are courageous enough to pursue your God given purpose.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie the fashion industry tells is that you need to look like someone else in order to “look cool.” The truth is that you must look like the best version of yourself and that’s what will bring true joy. That joy will be reflected in how you present yourself and THAT is what will make you “look cool.” Influencers are great, but let your own conscience (and the inner peace that comes with it) be the final influencer.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If immortality were real, what would you build?
I would build a school to teach others (particularly high school students) how to start their own fashion business. I don’t have the capacity in this lifetime to even begin to start something but I can see how it would benefit generations to come. Knowledge is power. And that power can transform communities. The power to live forever means you have the ability to make a positive impact with ripple effects.
