Rashad, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
For me, integrity comes first. Growing up in Atlanta’s inner city, I learned quick that your word is everything. If people can’t trust you, nothing else really matters. Intelligence comes next — not just book smarts, but knowing how to move, read people, and make smart choices when life throws challenges your way. And energy is what keeps you going. Coming from Atlanta, Georgia , you need that drive to push through setbacks and stay focused on your goals. Integrity keeps me grounded, intelligence guides me, and energy drives me forward.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Rashad Patterson is a trailblazing children’s book author who blends the wonders of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) with the insights of sociology to spark curiosity and empathy in young readers. By weaving educational concepts into vibrant, relatable stories, Rashad creates immersive reading experiences that inspire children to explore the world around them—and understand the people in it. His innovative approach is redefining the children’s book industry, turning each page into a gateway for both discovery and social connection.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
Honestly, I’d say I was mostly self-taught. My first job was at McDonald’s on Virginia Avenue, and that’s where I really learned the basics — showing up on time, handling responsibility, and dealing with people. At the same time, I watched my parents get up and go to work every day, no matter what. Seeing their grind taught me what it means to stay committed and put in the effort, even when it’s tough.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yeah, there was a moment that really tested me. I was invited to do a school reading on the Southside of Atlanta, and when I got there, the school refused to let me read one of my books. They said it was “too real” because I didn’t sugarcoat anything, but my whole goal was to teach kids a valuable lesson that’s relevant to what they face in society. It was frustrating and made me question if my work was making an impact — but instead of giving up, it pushed me to keep going and stay true to my message.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
Growing up in Atlanta, I learned early that fads come and go, but truth lasts. I look at the impact — if something’s just popular for the moment but doesn’t build you up or move the community forward, it’s a fad. Foundational truth, on the other hand, stands the test of time. It’s rooted in values, integrity, and purpose. I stick to what aligns with who I am and what I believe, not just what’s trending.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say I stayed true to myself and never forgot where I came from. Growing up in Atlanta , I faced my share of challenges, but I want my story to be about resilience, purpose, and impact. I want folks to remember that I used my voice and my work to inspire others, especially the next generation, to believe they can rise above their circumstances and create something greater.
