Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Luzny.
Hi Kat, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey with embroidery started in 2020 during the height of the pandemic. Stuck at home like many others I sought out new creative outlets to pass the time. Embroidery has always been on my list to explore. Watching YouTube videos and teaching myself certain techniques it brought on a cathartic experience. After 2020 I kept it up making pieces for friends, family, and was starting to get commissions here and there. Never had plans to turn it into a small business, but I guess if you’re good at something give it a shot!
Eventually, I did expand the creativity with purchasing a Chainstitch embroidery machine in 2024. The possibilities were endless and the projects were getting bigger. I could whip up patches, embroider custom bandanas and give some flair to pieces of clothing. This whole venture of a hobby becoming a tiny but might business has changed my life in so many ways.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggle for me was believing and manifesting in myself to keep going. There were days where I felt burn out, self doubt, and frustration. Bouncing between jobs to find the time to create was a struggle, which caused the burn out. I had doubts to move forward and put myself out there. Became frustrated with never having enough time in the day and days in the week to meet deadlines. Now, here I am with a better head on my shoulders to make sure everything is running smoothly. It takes time to get all the kinks outs, and it doesn’t have to be perfect right away. Be patient with yourself is what I have learned the most from the start.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in hand crank chainstitch embroidery on a vintage machine. Known for making patches, custom embroidered pieces from bandanas and hats. Even do up-cycling on jackets, vests and other gear.
Im most proud of helping others express themselves through the flair I make. Brings me joy to see individuality shine when they see something they love.
What sets me apart is I am the only chain stitcher in Athens, Georgia!
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Plan on holding more live stitching events and traveling. Hopefully one day maybe have my own store front where clients can come shop, have a consultation, and see the magic happen.
I think embroidery is here to stay in many ways. People enjoy having personalized designs whether it’s for themselves or a group. Adding the “live stitching” to an event gets people curious how it’s done.
There is something unique about the process. Historically chain stitch machines are famous for ‘Nudie Suits’ by Nudie Cohn. Who made some of the most elaborate outfits for famous stars and singers. This is coming back in present times with current trends. Everyone has the opportunity to create their own custom outfit whether it’s a wedding, concert, or performance.
