Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Thomas.
Hi Jamie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
As a master level social worker, I have had the pleasure of practicing in different positions before starting my own practice. I learned so much as a hospice social worker, director of social services at a nursing home, and then as an intensive in home therapist for kids in a community mental health organization. Taking in all that knowledge across the human lifespan prepared me for practicing on my own. I learned about running the business side of a private practice from very generous peers who wanted to lift up other therapists to see them succeed. You can never have too many therapists!
I’m also a mom raising my kids here in the Atlanta area, a CrossFit coach who loves helping people push past limits and grow in their physical health, and a community theater enthusiast who believes in the power of stories to connect us. I see myself as a connector, bringing people together in meaningful ways whether it’s through therapy, fitness, theater, or family life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a mostly smooth road that left me feeling prepared to take next steps at obvious points in time. However, learning to deal with insurance companies is a long, frustrating, and laborious process. A turning point for me with my business came when I recognized that even though I wanted to avoid working with insurance companies it was not feasible if I wanted Fox Oak Counseling to take off and be sustainable.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Fox Oak Counseling?
Fox Oak Counseling is a private therapy practice built on the belief that healing happens when people feel truly seen and supported. I specialize in working with individuals who are living with ADHD, navigating trauma, or seeking affirming care as part of the LGBTQ+ community. My main therapeutic tools are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR, and solution-focused therapy, but what really sets me apart is how I blend evidence-based strategies with a down-to-earth, approachable style that makes therapy feel both safe and doable.
What I’m most proud of brand-wise is how Fox Oak Counseling has become known for creating a space where people can drop the mask and show up as their full selves. Clients often tell me they feel genuinely understood and that therapy with me feels less clinical “check-the-box” and more like building skills and strategies they can actually use day to day.
For readers, I’d want you to know that Fox Oak Counseling is not a cookie-cutter practice. I meet clients where they are, honor their lived experiences, and focus on practical, real-world progress. Whether it’s processing trauma through EMDR, developing ADHD-friendly strategies, or simply having a safe place to exhale, my services are designed to help people get unstuck and move toward the life they want.
What are your plans for the future?
When I think about the future, I don’t picture one big, rigid plan. Instead, I’m excited about continuing to explore the areas of therapy that light me up. I’d love to deepen my knowledge of Internal Family Systems, and I’m curious about stepping into research one day. I plan to keep learning and expanding how I support neurodivergent clients and stay engaged with the evolving needs of the LGBTQ+ community. On a creative note, I’m fascinated by the idea of using things like Dungeons & Dragons in group therapy to help people build coping tools and social skills. There are so many directions to grow, and I’m proud that Fox Oak Counseling will always be a place where exploration and innovation are welcome.
