Inspiring Conversations with Jon German of Black Market Barbecue

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon German.

Hi Jon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been a fan of BBQ. My first job in high school was working for the local bbq spot in cumming. After college I entered the corporate world and ended up working as a freight broker. During covid, I was laid off. After speaking with my wife, Kasey, we decided to chase our dream of owning a food truck. In October of 2020 we served our first customer.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There were road blocks. In the summer of 2021 we were rearended and our trailer and van were totalled. We lost 4 months of business and any momentum we created. It worked out to where we were able to upgrade to a better trailer and better equipment. We’ve dealt with truck transmissions, blown tires, minor accidents, stuck in the mud, just about any scenario you can imagine is what we’ve seen.

We’ve been impressed with Black Market Barbecue, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We’re a family owned small business that strives to provide our customers with delicious, competition quality BBQ while also providing fast and friendly service. We offer catering services for any events, weddings, corporate lunches, you name it! All of our BBQ is top tier but our beef brisket is what our customers rave about. Our mac n cheese was nominated best of atlanta in 2022 by Access Atlanta. Our menu consists of pulled pork, beef brisket, and baby back ribs smoked over The Good Charcoal Company coal and hickory. Our sides are made by hand and include our famous mac n cheese, coleslaw, southern style potato salad, and chips. Our best sellers also include our BBQ Nachos and our Mac n Cheese Bowl. I’m most proud of providing customers with a quality product at a fair price with outstanding service.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
You have to be resourceful and have the tenacity to keep going when times are hard.
