Today we’d like to introduce you to Hadiya Barlatier-Johnson.
Hi Hadiya , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began my career focused on supporting military families and individuals navigating trauma, mood disorders, and complex life transitions. Early on, I noticed that many people only sought therapy when life became overwhelming. Over time, I realized that therapy is not only for moments of crisis. It can also be a space for release, reflection, and grounding.
Preventive care is not a revolutionary idea, yet it is often overlooked. Life will always bring challenges we cannot control, but having a consistent space to process can make those challenges more manageable. I want to normalize the idea that therapy is not reserved only for major turning points. It can also be for all the moments in between. Sometimes you go to therapy simply because you can, not because everything is falling apart.
That belief inspired me to create Hey, You Need Therapy (HYNT), a practice built on honesty, accessibility, and meeting people where they are. Today, HYNT is a space for real conversations, whether someone is navigating trauma or simply needing a moment to exhale.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I started HYNT during a major life transition. My spouse was retiring from active duty service, and as a family we were learning to shift into civilian life while planting firm roots in Georgia. At the same time, I was building a practice from the ground up, balancing the realities of running a business with my vision of what therapy could and should be.
The journey has not been without its challenges. As someone who is neurodivergent and experiences learning differences, I face unique hurdles navigating systems, managing structures, and adapting to the constant changes in the mental health field. The learning curve is steep, especially while carrying the responsibility of showing up fully for clients.
Recently, we expanded HYNT by welcoming three additional psychotherapists, each bringing their own expertise and perspective. Growth at this level is not for the faint of heart, but it is deeply rewarding to see the vision take shape and the impact it creates.
What keeps me moving forward is the reason I started HYNT in the first place and my own commitment to therapy. I believe therapy should be accessible not just in moments of crisis but in the everyday spaces of life. Each challenge along the way has shaped HYNT into the practice it is today, one that reflects both professional structure and the human care that clients deserve.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
With my neurodivergent brain, I could recommend resources all day, and honestly, what I reach for often depends on my mood. The one constant is my love of books. I read widely on therapy, neurodiversity, and personal growth because they keep me curious and grounded. Memoirs and personal narratives remind me of the human side of this work, giving me perspectives that shape both my life and my practice.
These resources help me show up not just as a therapist, but as a collaborator and a whole person walking alongside my clients. On my current list: No One Is Self-Made by Dr. Lakeysha “Key” Hallmon. While it’s not a therapy-leaning book, I know it will be deeply therapeutic in its own way. Get into Dr. Key, she’s DOPE for the culture and beyond. I’m also tuned into The Unfolding: Presented by The Loveland Foundation, a podcast that continues to inspire me.
