Today we’d like to introduce you to J. Harrison Oyler.
J. Harrison, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started out doing graphic design. Honestly, I loved it but over time I began to get very bored. One day I met this photographer named Brian. He used to do graphic design as well and then he switched and became a photographer. Now he’s a professional photographer for eSports.
While talking he convinced me that graphic design wasn’t nearly as interesting as photography… I listened.
I started out by taking pictures of my friends on my iPhone. After a couple of months, I began to get better and a lot of people were telling me to invest in a camera so I did. When my birthday came in June I went to the store and bought a Nikon d5500 and I am so glad I did.
I really enjoyed graphic design and I still do it on and off but I absolutely love photography. Every shoot is an adventure, and you meet so many different people.
It’s amazing! Now I currently take pictures of anyone and anything from rappers to my friend’s shoe collection. My only goal at the moment is to have fun and improve as I go.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been very smooth. Networking and getting out there has been a struggle of mine. There have been times where I would be doing a shoot every week and then there would be a month that I wouldn’t have any shoots. I would say about 95% of the people I shoot have found me through my social media and that’s mostly how I network. In a day and age where everyone has social media, it’s the best way to get out there.
I am now starting to get a buzz through my Instagram and that’s how I came in contact with people like YFN Lucci and Piece God.
How would you describe the type of kid you were growing up?
Well, I still am growing up haha. I am extremely passionate, wise and determined.
Is there a specific memory from when you were younger that you really miss?
Meeting Travis Scott.
So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
Not many changes. I’m gonna keep doing what I’m doing, keep growing. My only plans are to keep shooting and go with what happens.
