Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Mosley.
Hi Theresa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m originally from Meridian, Mississippi. I moved to Georgia in 2008 seeking better opportunities. My background is in education and psychology. I tried to find a counseling position but couldn’t at the time, so after two months I accepted a public-school teaching job in Fulton County. After four years, I met a counselor who passed my number to his supervisor, who then hired me as a therapist at his private school. I worked there for five years before launching my own practice in 2016. Since then, I’ve been providing therapy at 260 Peachtree Street NW, Atlanta, Georgia 30303.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve been fortunate that the process has been mostly smooth, though I did face one significant challenge. Unfortunately, my former employer tried to prevent me from leaving his school because of the revenue I was generating for him. He contacted the licensing board and attempted to have my license revoked. The board reviewed the allegations and dismissed the complaint. In fact, the board chair remarked that my former boss should have done everything possible to retain me in the role.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m passionate about helping others and building community. I specialize in behavior management, depression, anxiety, and psychotic disorders. I’m especially proud to have grown my practice from 20 to 300 clients and to hear from clients that I’ve made a tremendous difference in their lives. Most of my clients have been with me for years. What sets me apart is that I partner with an organization that provides resources to support my clients. Even after they finish therapy, they can continue accessing those resources.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
About 80% of my clients have been incarcerated. In our initial sessions, it’s often challenging to help them shift their thinking, secure employment, and find stable placements.
