Hi Joshua, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Fashion and art have always been at the center of my life. In school, I was most known for my fashion sense always putting together outfits that stood out. I’ve always had a natural ability for the technical side of any craft, with a strong eye for detail, but what inspired me most was seeing how clothing could completely transform the way someone felt about themselves. That passion was deeply influenced by my mother. She has been sewing since she was young, and as a single mother of four, she often relied on her skills to provide for us. Watching her resilience and dedication gave me both the foundation and motivation to pursue this path.
When I made the decision to start a business, I completely immersed myself in learning soaking up everything I could about tailoring and alterations. At the same time, my mom was right there beside me, passing down everything she had learned from her years of experience. That combination of self-teaching and her guidance gave me the confidence I needed to take the leap and bring J. Lewis Customs to life.
In March 2024, at 20 years old, I officially launched J. Lewis Customs. My mother made the decision to leave her job at David’s Bridal to join me full-time, and together we turned our shared passion into something bigger. She brings over two decades of experience in sewing and alterations, while I bring fresh vision and drive. Our business is built on love, family, and the belief that attention to detail matters. At J. Lewis Customs, every garment we touch is treated as an opportunity to bring out someone’s confidence and individuality.
For me, J. Lewis Customs is more than just a tailoring and alteration business it’s the first step toward building a legacy. My ultimate goal is to expand beyond custom alterations into designing and creating original pieces on a larger scale. What we’re doing now is laying the groundwork, and every project we take on is a part of the story I want to continue writing for years to come.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road definitely hasn’t been smooth. Balancing the financial side of running a business was a big challenge—investing in equipment, materials, and building a client base required a lot of faith and discipline. I’ve always led with a business-first mindset, so when my mom left her job to work with me full-time, it gave me the pressure and motivation I needed to make this work for both of us. On top of that came the typical starting hurdles: how do I get my name out there, build a website, grow a clientele, and earn people’s trust? And beyond that—how do I carry myself in a way that makes clients feel confident trusting a 20-year-old with their garments?
