Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Shannon Wilkerson EdD ACS NCC LPC.
Hi Dr. Shannon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
After graduating from Savannah State University (Bachelor of Science Degree in Behavior Analysis), I worked at Juliette Low Elementary School in the Special Education Department. During that time, I gained extensive experience with implementing evidence-based behavioral interventions, creating behavioral support plans, and co-facilitating individual education plan (IEP) meetings. After working at Juliette Low Elementary, I desired to further my education in psychology by expanding my knowledge in the field and supervising future clinicians. I obtained three graduate degrees from the University of West Georgia (Master of Arts Degree in Psychology, Specialist Degree in Counseling, and Ed.D in Counselor Education and Supervision) while also working in mental health, crisis teams, and developmental disability environments. My mentor Dr. Kristy Christopher-Holloway (New Vision Counseling Center LLC) encouraged me to take on a more leadership role in the profession by acting as Assistant Director over her business. During that time, I learned a lot regarding the ins and outs of running a private practice. Since 2024, I have been running my own private practice (MindDevelopers Counseling & Supervision PC). At MindDevelopers, we have a diverse and dedicated team. Our specialists consist of experienced mental health professionals that are passionate and driven to help manage your mental health. My business goals for 2026, is to purchase an office building to expand services.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While obtaining my doctoral degree (2022) my mother was diagnosed with cancer. It was a hard time for me due to the circumstances of navigating school, work, and other personal issues. In 2025, my mother decided to finish her transition at home with family. During those final weeks, it brought our family closer together and changed the way I look at the time we have here.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the CEO of MindDevelopers Counseling Supervision and work also as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Approved Clinical Supervisor in the State of Georgia. I have experience working with children, adolescents, and adults in a variety of settings. This consists of psychiatric treatment residential facilities, CORE services, hospitals, group homes, crisis management, and school settings. My therapeutic approach to assisting clients includes Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Client-Centered Therapy, Black Positive Psychology, and Behavioral Therapy. I believe at the core, people have the natural ability to heal themselves. Through these various techniques, I assist clients in navigating difficult life situations.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I have learned in my journey is to be authentic and to maintain faith. Through authenticity, it sets you apart and keeps you grounded. My faith has allowed me to trust myself more and understand better my purpose.
