Check Out Marcus Jones’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Jones.

Hi Marcus, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a graduate from the University of Central Florida, and although I did not pursue a degree in zoology or marine biology, I’ve always have a love for animals and wildlife conservation. When I was a child, my teacher wanted us to create a brochure of our dream job. Mine was about the aquarium. Ironically, I have worked at two aquariums since. I have a great deal of experience working with animals, and I’m passionate about promoting their wellbeing. I recently co-authored a children’s book with my mother titled; “Nate Knew He Would Be a Winner”. My love for animals prompted me to write about the zoo and to encourage kids to be brave, dream big and believe in themselves.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe that every journey is never entirely smooth. Yes I have faced a few challenges. For example, my intention was to get a degree in zoology and marine biology. But I shifted to Communications for various reasons and often times I wished that I pursued a degree working with animals. As of now, finding positions in the animal industry is very competitive. But I’ve been blessed with two careers at two aquariums. Concerning the books, we experienced some initial difficulties with the illustrations. However in the end, they came out beautiful.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have experience working as an Animal Educator and an Animal Care Operation Specialist, combining public outreach with hands-on animal husbandry. I take pride in teaching others the importance of responsible animal care and the value of treating all animals with respect. And recently I became an author of a new children’s book titled “Nate Knew He Would Be a Winner”.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice for finding a mentor is to understand what you want for yourself, build a relationship with the mentor, take constructive criticism, be consistent and work together for a common goal.
