Community Highlights: Meet Jennifer Key of Keys to a Healthy Relationship, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Key.

Hi Jennifer, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey into counseling began long before I earned a degree. It started in high school at St. Hugh’s, where I admired the way our school counselor guided and supported us. At the same time, I witnessed the deep impact of my parents’ divorce on my brother, my mother, and myself. I knew what brokenness felt like firsthand, and I quietly made a promise to myself: one day, I would help families avoid the same pain and learn how to thrive together.

Even as I pursued other careers, first as a teacher, then as a real estate agent, the desire to counsel, to walk with people through their struggles, never left me. No matter how much I tried to focus on other paths, I felt a constant pull back to my true purpose: helping people heal, grow, and build healthy relationships.

It was my husband, Lloyd Key, who gave me the final push of encouragement. He reminded me of my calling and supported me in going back to school for my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. That decision changed everything. Not only did I complete my graduate training, but I also stepped out in faith and opened my own Christian counseling practice.

Today, I see my work as more than just a career; it is my calling. Counseling allows me to integrate my faith, my passion for healthy families, and my personal testimony into the way I serve others. Every client, every couple, every family is a reminder that what once caused me pain has now become the source of my purpose.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. My path has been filled with challenges that tested my strength and my faith.

One of the earliest struggles was living through my parents’ divorce. That experience not only shaped my perspective on family and relationships, but it also left me determined to help others avoid the same pain. Later, I faced the heartbreak of losing my mother, which was one of the hardest moments of my life. My infertility journey was another deeply personal challenge that brought grief, questions, and a need for healing.

On top of these personal struggles, I also faced professional ones. Going back to school at 40 to pursue my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling was not an easy road. I wrestled with self-doubt, fear of failing, and even failed some classes along the way. At times, the negative mindset felt heavier than the coursework itself.

Yet, through each obstacle, I discovered resilience I didn’t know I had. My faith became my anchor, and my husband’s encouragement gave me strength to keep going. Those struggles taught me that failure is not the end, it can be the very thing that refines us and equips us to serve others more authentically. Today, I see every challenge as part of the preparation that allows me to sit with clients, not just with professional expertise, but with lived compassion and understanding.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the founder of Keys to a Healthy Relationship, a Christian counseling and coaching practice dedicated to helping individuals, couples, and families heal, grow, and thrive for over twelve years . We specialize in areas such as premarital counseling, marriage counseling, family restoration, emotional healing, grief counseling, trauma recovery, and anger management.

One of the things that sets us apart is that my husband and I often counsel couples together. This dynamic allows clients to see both a male and female perspective in a safe, supportive space. In addition, we extend our impact beyond the therapy room by offering Workplace Wellbeing Training for organizations, helping employees and leaders strengthen emotional intelligence, communication, and stress management in professional settings.

Our distinctiveness lies in the way we integrate clinical mental health practices with Christian faith. We not only provide evidence-based counseling techniques, but we also pray with our clients and invite God into the healing process. This integrated approach allows people to experience transformation in their mind, body, and spirit.

I’m especially proud of the resources we’ve created, from our premarital workbook, The Keys to Unlocking Your Heart, and Minding Your Own Business, a personal development journal, to The Divine Makeover and our Transform. Wife™ Coaching Academy and workshops, all designed to give people practical tools that last a lifetime.

At Keys to a Healthy Relationship, we’re known for being a place of hope. Whether it’s helping men process trauma, walking with families through grief, empowering women in their identity, or guiding couples into healthier connection, our mission is the same: to restore hearts, build strong families, and create spaces where both love and faith can flourish.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Yes! In addition to counseling and coaching, we also equip other leaders. We offer training for Christian coaches, counselors, and pastors on how to turn their calling into a thriving career. It’s one of our greatest joys to see others walk boldly into their purpose and build sustainable practices that make an impact.

We are also available for speaking engagements, conferences, seminars, retreats, and workplace wellness trainings. Whether it’s pouring into church leaders, empowering couples, or helping organizations strengthen employee wellbeing, our goal is always the same: to inspire transformation, build healthier relationships, and strengthen communities.

At Keys to a Healthy Relationship, we don’t just counsel — we equip, empower, and expand hope wherever we go.
