Today we’d like to introduce you to Landy.
Hi Landy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For those that don’t know me, I go online by OkayLandy and by the time you finish reading this you will be like okay, Landy. I am a 25-year-old content creator and I have had the privilege to build my own community through social media. I create content about cosplay, gaming, travel and comedy skits of whatever I think is funny at the time. I started to become more active in content creation in 2023. Back in 2017, I had a small bit of traction on Twitter (now X). There was a community I could interact with and make videos of me being myself. After 2 years on twitter, I woke up one day and realized “I am never going to meet any of my online friends. What’s the point?”. After that I dropped Twitter completely because I thought I was never going to get a sense of community in person. Talking online to friends is nice but digital communication will never replace in-person communication. If only younger me had known several years later. Fast forward to 2022, I discovered cosplaying and conventions. By the 2nd convention I attended, I had made friends who became family to me. To be honest, discovering this community made me realize how shy I was to approach people at conventions. Part of the reason why I started content creation a year later was because I had some instagram reels that went viral and I had a few people approach me telling me they had liked the video I made. This made it so much easier for me to make friends. On top of my cosplays and content creation, I was able to become more sociable since people approached me which at the time I really lacked. Of course, my biggest requirement for this path was that I have fun. If I’m not having fun then why bother? I realized that with content creation, I can actually meet people and make genuine relationships. Part of me was upset that I stopped using Twitter because maybe I would have a jumpstart to this path of my life but times were different and I do have more opportunities and leverage now. I am still continuing to grow as I know there is still much more I can do with my potential. I have personal goals for myself and other goals I hope to achieve for others. I hope to inspire others to take action for their dreams now as I am currently doing. All it takes is one step at a time.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No adventure is fun if it’s too easy. The biggest obstacle is myself. I tend to be critical whenever I’m not at the place I want to be at. I could have 3 good things going for me but if I stumble upon one mishap my brain will fixate on that. Understanding goals are a marathon and not a sprint helps me calm down and focus on my journey one step at a time.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The thing that got me started was cosplaying. I love making big and unique props and the amount of effort I put into them would shine at conventions. I made a lot of friends because of my prop-making skills. I would include lights into my cosplays and it was something you don’t see very often. If you saw someone at a Georgia convention walking with bright lights, that was probably me. I am most proud of making props that have never been done before. It is always a fun challenge to do whenever I get inspired. I believe the way I present myself and how much I travel allows my audience to get a glimpse into my compact life. I am always looking for ways to expand my content and elevate myself to new heights. I look forward to growing more and meeting people through this wonderful community.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I feel like continuing to do content creation has been the biggest risk for me. I want to make a name for myself and not getting to where you want to be despite all the work you’ve done is a fear I believe most of us have. It can be very difficult to build a community if you don’t have something to offer. Some of us want to get to our dream position in little time and it requires a lot of discipline and patience to achieve that. It’s been a roller coaster of emotions in believing in myself for content creation but failing in love with the process and knowing to be patient has helped me stay vigilant. It’s a risk every day to spend equipment, edit, film and create on top of my schedule with work and graduate school. You have to bet on yourself and improve everyday to reach higher sights.
