Meet Marah Kamann of Affirm Electrolysis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marah Kamann.

Hi Marah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story is rather recent in terms of opening my business. Why I opened is very personal. My hair removal journey didn’t start off all that great and wanted to provide a place where everyone feels comfortable. Everyone has hair that they are self conscience about or makes them uncomfortable for various reasons and sometimes my clients will be exposing themselves in a very vulnerable way. For some clients, such as my trans clients, most likely are already really uncomfortable about the hair. They have anxiety about going somewhere that may or may not accept them and what will the bathroom situation might be like? Even though this is the Atlanta, living in the south makes you ask those questions. I understand this because I had all those thoughts and feelings when starting my electrolysis sessions early in my transition. So I wanted to create a safe space with someone you can relate with, not just my trans client, but for anyone that ever felt uncomfortable getting their hair removed. Come as you are.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a difficult road, but one that I’m proud of. Having not worked for two years, starting a small business was not easy. I cashed out my IRA to pay for school leaving me with little to nothing left. Relied on my wonderful girlfriend to help me financially and emotionally. I also got some help through a classmate that I went out for training with and roomed with during that education. She covered the living expenses while in school for which I am very grateful. I sold my house barely making a profit upon returning from school and put that towards equipment and supplies. Got more help financially for the essential equipment from my girlfriend. I have been able to turn a small profit in less than a year and have started paying my girlfriend back for her assistance and my classmate. There were other struggles along the way of a personal nature. Without the help of friends and loved ones, none of it would have been possible. I did not do this alone so thank you to everyone who supported me.

We’ve been impressed with Affirm Electrolysis, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

I specialize in electrolysis permanent hair removal, specifically the blend method. What I want people to know, which is often times misrepresented by laser providers, is that electrolysis is the ONLY hair removal method approved by the FDA for PERMANENT hair removal. Laser is only approved for permanent reduction. Electrolysis is going to be slower because we are going one follicle at a time with a tiny probe to reach and destroy the root structure, preventing any new hair growth. This is achieved by essentially destroying the follicle making any hair growth impossible. Far too often I get clients that had done laser and either it didn’t work or it turned their hair white or couldn’t treat the white hairs and the worst case scenario, increases hair growth. Yes, laser can cause what’s called paradoxical hypertrichosis which causes increased hair growth by basically waking up those thousands of dormant hairs in their resting phase known as telogen or the tiny vellus “baby” hairs turn into thick anagen hairs with active follicles.

Look at electrolysis as a marathon not a sprint. Some client’s timeframe for their hair removal needs are quicker than others. In those cases I understand doing what works for you and there is never any pressure from me to come or go. I simply want to make safe place to get your hair removed, that’s it!

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Probably all the adventures me and my brother got into growing up and all the time that I got to spend with him. He and I have always been really close. We shared a room until I was 13 and then shared a jack/jill style bathroom between our rooms. He’s my biggest supporter and always there when I need him.
