Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt King.
Hi Matt , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up on military bases, so I was an army brat. Growing up mostly in bavaria region of Germany. I graduated high school in south Georgia. Where I found a great tech school for photography.
I earned a commercial photography diploma from north george tech in 1996. My photography career truly started 1993 doing weddings and portraits. as my career progressed over the years.
I slowly branched out into industrial photography, as in schools, sports, and action . Wanting to do more In the art range of photography started photographing waterfalls,Landscapes, and the hidden things along the trails that no one notices. Then, eventually doing night photography. I was president of the foothills photography group for 2 years. Where I am still a member.
All of my images have a great story to them. From the journey to get the image to the challenges of making the image. My hope is to show the world what I see and how I got there.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My career started out pretty rocky. I found out early on that weddings were not for me. We still used film, Digital had not come around yet. I started supplementing my income by doing school photography for a number of different companies over the years. Being a photographer from the mid 90s thru the 2000s the industry has changed a lot. The corporatizing of school photography companies Which cut photographers pay in half to 2001 when on 9/11 a massive change came to the photography world and affected all photographers, as the US changed its focus. Photography took a hit as well. The next came in 2007 with the financial crisis and the adoption of digital technology
Which reduced photographers pay to minimum wage. It’s hard out in here being a photographer. Through it all, it’s been Rocky hard road. But well-traveled.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I see things a little bit different. To me, everything’s a little bit brighter sharper., i see color in things that others don’t
I find details interesting that others would just walk right by. And I have a very strong desire to create images, to show the world what I see. My world is bright and vivid with lots of detail. Which makes my images, bold and bright.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Showing the hidden beauty that everyone walks by and never notices. Whether it be a face or a waterfall or toddstool off to the side of a path. I was always the quiet one sitting watching the world as people move through it.
