Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Godard.
Hi Mary, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
People have always told me their story. I wanted to make a career of providing a safe place for that, so I earned my masters degree in general clinical mental health counseling. After interning in a partial hospitalization program, I found my home in private practice.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Before finding the courage to pursue my calling, I earned my juris doctorate and worked largely in contract administration for many years. While I enjoyed the work, it was never fulfilling in the way that providing mental health therapy is.
I do not accept insurance but offer a sliding scale. Frequently, I am approached by potential clients who hesitate to self-pay. Often, though, my reduced rate is comparable to their out of pocket, and we are not hindered by the treatment restrictions imposed by insurance companies.

I started my own private practice nearly three years ago. Fostering a judgment-free space, I offer individual and couple/relationship counseling in-person and via telehealth for clients located across Georgia. I work with those age twelve and up. Drawing from multiple modalities to meet my clients where they are, the approaches that most resonate in my experience are client-centered, narrative, and attachment theory. Many of my clients are members of the LGBTQ+ community. I welcome helping clients with anxiety, depression, anger, and grief, among other issues. Everyone needs to be heard and seen, and providing that is my passion.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memories surround instances of family and friends confiding in me and trusting that I would hold sacred that honor.
