Today we’d like to introduce you to Pedram Charepoo.
Hi Pedram, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It has been some time since the last interview with VoyageATL. In the course of the last two years, we solidly established our collective (TOG – The Other Guys) in the Atlanta electronic music scene and also established a record label, TOG Worldwide. The record label was an accidental organization that was born out of necessity. We did not really find any established electronic music labels here in the Atlanta area and as a result, we decided to take the steps and establish the necessary partnerships that would help us make our goals a reality.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a result of our concerted efforts to participate in the local music scene, opening our arms to local artists who were looking for a community, and establishing a strong online presence, there were not really a lot of barriers to establishing the record label or setting up our monthly shows. The biggest challenge for all of us was really balancing the many hats we are all needing to wear as artists. We’ve had to be responsible for our own sales, marketing, advertising, record distribution, artist relations, booking, management, and much more.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
TOG Worldwide is an Atlanta based record label focused on electronic music but the core founders of the label and collective (TOG) members have roots in the world of pop and hip-hop music. As a result of this history, we have also worked with notable Atlanta mainstay and Attic Crew alumni Big Floaty for the release of his recent record “Big Gurl” and also a long awaited project “Here I Stand”
As a label primarily focused on electronic dance music, we’ve partnered with LabelRadar to now open our services globally and work with many of the extremely talented heard and unheard voices in the world of electronic music.
The thing that we are most proud of is our artist-centric approach to the work that we do. Even in the release of music, all of the artists working with our label retain the lions-share of the ownership of the music that we release for them. We have been working with locals who are looking to learn music producer, mixing, mastering, sound design, DJing, and lowering the barrier of entry for people who want to be a part of the work we are doing and contribute to our continued success.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was personally a little timid but always very driven for the things that I was interested in. I started learning music at the age of 4 when I asked my parents to get me a violin because I have an older brother who was something of a prodigy. My father, also a musician, was always looking for the latest and greatest technology and tools for music creation. Growing up we had a room in our basement which had a pentium 2 computer with Encore notation software and Cakewalk installed on it which I started to learn how to use at that young age of 4-5.
As I got older, I found that I was driven to look for business opportunities to put money in my pocket and fund things I was interested, whether it was music, video games, movies, or whatever it be.
As an adult, that passion for music and business has stayed with me and the marriage of those two things have resulted in meeting the right people, partnering with the right friends and working with my brother in law to establish the collective and now running a label together which is truly global.
