Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Rouse.
Maria, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was younger I wanted to draw but never felt like I could get the technical aspects right. Then I wanted to paint, but as you know, you kind of have to be able to draw to do that. Yet some part of me always wanted to be an artist. Then I discovered photography. And when I realized I could turn people into art through pictures a whole new world of expression opened up for me.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. It took a while for me to find my niche. I use to be a photographer who specialized in everything, but that burned me out, especially if I got requests for something I really didn’t enjoy. Also as a creative you sometimes question is you work good enough. But I make sure to do personal projects also that are just for me. You have to make art for yourself sometimes.
So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
My plans for the future are to do more fine art portraits of children. I’m also working on a few projects that will be released as books in the near future, also mostly focused on children, and geared toward helping lift their self-esteem.
Let’s explore some of the challenges you’ve faced along the way. What was the most difficult part of your career so far?
I discovered photography in high school and I fell in love. I loved the darkroom and watching my images develop. I loved painting on the actual photographs, black and white images. I loved that you turn people into art through photographs. Everything. But I never thought I could make a career out of it, so I listened to my parents and went to school for my other passion psychology. I didn’t touch a camera for years. Then after 2 surgeries due to endometriosis (and having to lose an ovary,) a bad breakup, and depression, I bought a camera on a whim. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. Photography saved me. It gave me an outlet and something fun to focus on.
What about “Wow-moments” – any moments that stick out? Any moments when you felt like you had made it?
Although I’ve been doing photography for almost 4 years, I just recently started to push my business this past year. I stopped worrying about if I was good enough or worth the prices I charge. I started acting with confidence because I love my work and I knew that I would start attracting the clients who love and see value in my work also. And I have some great clients!
