We’re looking forward to introducing you to Mark Mundy. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Mark, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Proud of all the projects that leave the studio when they are completed. From the singer in church to recently finishing a project with my brother, Matt Mundy. And when those projects get recognized, it is extra special. My long time client and cousin Jayna Jennings has recorded and released a ton of music out of Flossy Monk. She pushes me out of my comfort zone and lets me run wild with arrangements and production on her original songs. Her music has consistently been considered at the annual Josie Awards in Nashville TN. Many of which she has won including Americana Album and Song of the year.
I also do some sessions with a fellow Forsyth County resident, Russell Moore. Russell is the founder and lead vocalist for the Bluegrass band IIIrd Tyme Out. More recently he was asked to replace Dan Tyminski in Alison Krause and Union Station. He is tasked with providing harmony and/or lead vocal parts for many projects of all levels. His part on the Becky Isaacs album helped her get a Grammy Nod in 2022. Although she didn’t win, it was certainly exciting for me to have the tiniest part of creating that record.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Mark Mundy owner and operator of Flossy Monk Studio in Cumming GA. I have been recording and playing music since 1980. In 2014 I decided to invest in a real home studio complete with a recording and control room. I can house solo artist or full bands annd can play most anything traditional instrument if needed and record music ranging from Bluegrass to Full rock ensembles. A deep love and appreciation for all genres make Flossy Monk the perfect studio for the young singer just starting out or seasoned pros wanting a quaint affordable option for their project.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I have always been told by friends and family that I was pretty good at guitar, singing and even recording music, but until I married Terri (Mundy), I didn’t have anyone put their money where their mouth was. Owning a studio takes money and until I had a partner fully believe in me, I never felt real. Having her to share this dream with me is crucial.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
If you are doing music for money, fame or adulation, there will be a constant possibility of disappointment and failure. The content you produce will at its core just be a product. Conversely, if you create music or art that really means something to you, and is truly from your heart, there’s no way you can fail. The result is the success. If a little money comes with it – Bonus!
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Mostly. I try to be the same (within reason) with all my family and friends. Of course there are certain words you just don’t say around momma. If I am out playing gigs I tend to be a little more lively than at home with my wife. She’s super supportive but I best leave my ego on the stage. I have the best friends around and I love that we grew up together and have very few secrets from each other. It is very freeing.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
I am down for anything musically. There truly isn’t a style or genre that I don’t have an interest in. I love combining styles into something new as well as a clear reverence to the traditional sounds of music. Having that adventurous spirit in the studio is fresh air for the client but also keeps me excited about new projects.
