Today we’d like to introduce you to Dexter Davis.
Dexter, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for cameras since I was a young boy. However, when it was time for me to leave home for college, I declared my major to do something in the medical field. After a couple of years of thinking, I was going to be in the medical field, I had a talk with myself and decided to pursue a career in something I’m most passionate about and that’s Mass Media. Once I took on the Mass Media major, I decided to work on my own projects, and from there Scrill Media came about. My best friends Joycelynn Okezie named the brand, and my brother Ryan Davis manages Scrill Media.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Mass Media from Valdosta State University. After I graduated college, I stayed in Valdosta, GA for an extra semester to improve on photography. I was doing approximately two photoshoots per week. I’m so passionate about photography, that I paid to take a black and white film photography class to become more knowledgable in that particular area. While taking Black and White film photography I learned how to shoot film, process film by hand, create contact sheets to see the end results of my negatives and create prints in the dark room. Out of all the classes I had taken in college, I enjoyed black and white photography the most. After taking that class, my time in Valdosta had come to an end and that’s when I made my move to Atlanta. Once moving to Atlanta, I linked up with a great friend of mine Cam Kirk.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a pretty smooth road for me so far, especially since relocating to Atlanta. I have had a lot of big gigs since working up here. However, at times business can be a little slow. Some of the struggles along the way for me are just thinking of new ways to brand and market myself, and having a more consistent clientele.
When you look back, what are you most proud of?
I actually have a few proud moments of my career. Just to name a few, I had the opportunity to shoot the Level 13 fashion show during New York Fashion week hosted by Jason Derulo. I Had the opportunity to work on a few commercials with “Bevel” blade that was shot at Tuskegee University. Being able to work with Cam Kirk has also been a proud moment for me in my career. Working with Cam Kirk I’ve had the opportunity to shoot stuff for Dreezy and Interscope, Reebok, Lil Yatchy, Chevy Woods, London on da track, Black youngsta and more.
Tell us more about the struggles you’ve faced along the way.
I’ve had to struggle since I’ve been doing photography and videography. My reason for saying this is because, being that I’m a freelance photographer and Videographer, I have to constantly get people to pay for my services. At times I’m booked up and other times I’m not so booked. I’ve also had struggles of just taking my brand and my work in a different direction. I’m trying to be as innovative and unique as possible with scrillmedia.
Is there something we can do as a city to improve the outlook for professionals like you?
Atlanta is a Great place to be career wise. It’ a lot of opportunity In ATL for aspiring entrepreneurs. It’s a lot of talented people in Atlanta, so you really have to bring something to the table if you want to stand out and take your career to new heights.
