Exploring Life & Business with Henley Cook of Henley Cook Personal Training

Today we’d like to introduce you to Henley Cook.

Hi Henley, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I studied fashion in college and worked in related industries for a few years after graduation. I realized during that time that a core part of my identity was helping people and that I would need to incorporate that into my professional life to have a fulfilling career.

I pivoted to the fitness industry in 2017 as a group exercise instructor and then became a certified personal trainer in 2020. Throughout my career in the fitness industry, I’ve chosen to focus on a niche that I’m passionate about and felt that I could have a positive impact on the individuals I work with. I started out working with a therapeutic exercise program at a mental health treatment center and then transitioned to working with individuals recovering from an eating disorder. My current focus is functional strength training, incorporating corrective exercise and Postural Restoration Institute techniques to get my clients out of pain, reduce their risk of injury and improve their quality of life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say that for the most part it has been a smooth road, but it certainly has been a winding road. During college, I envisioned working in the fashion industry my whole life. I never would have thought that I’d be working in the fitness industry, let alone as a small business owner. It’s taken a lot of hard work, but I am very proud of where I’ve gotten to in my career and have grown a lot in the process.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Henley Cook Personal Training?
I am a personal trainer and small business owner. I continually expand my knowledge base beyond the standard personal trainer education requirements so that I can help my clients to the best of my ability. I offer one-on-one personal training services centered around functional strength training. Most of my clients work with me to improve their health-span, as well as restore and maintain pain-free movement.

Retraining the way a person moves and building strength in these foundational movements can be life-changing. My proudest moments are when I can free someone from pain that’s been nagging them for years, or when they’re able to do something in their everyday life that they previously weren’t able to, such as carry a heavy bag of cat litter or lift a suitcase into the overhead bin.

Activities of daily living seem mundane, but they are vital to maintaining a person’s independence and quality of life. Regaining the ability to walk up stairs or get up and down from the ground pain-free and with ease is liberating. I love helping my clients and am so grateful to have been led down this fulfilling career path.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Growth comes from taking risks and pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. Becoming an entrepreneur is inherently a risk, but if you believe in yourself and have hustle and resilience, it can be a very rewarding journey.

I feel that risk taking is a necessary part of owning and growing a business. Even when the unexpected happens, my motivation to help as many people as I can keeps pushing me forward.
