Community Highlights: Meet Kate of Viana Communications

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born with both a pathological need to serve and a broad entrepreneurial streak. I joined the nonprofit world as a volunteer in 2012 and worked my way up to being a board member, then staff member and contractor, for dozens of nonprofits around North America. In 2018, realizing I wanted to expand my impact, I launched Viana Social – a nonprofits-only marketing firm providing high-quality social media and fundraising for small and mid-size orgs. As time went on, my long-term vision (and what I see as my true purpose) came into focus: four interconnected, tiered brands that meet those smaller orgs wherever they are and guide them intentionally to greater growth and health. The four brands, nested under Viana Communications, are NonprofiText, Viana Social, Nontoxic Nonprofits, and Opscale Systems. Today, my team and I are building all four while continuing to work with orgs all over the continent.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t it has been smooth, but I’ve been very fortunate to have such a clear vision for the impact I want to make and how I want to make it. The biggest challenge has been finding long-term team members and learning to delegate. This work takes a village of very talented people; I certainly couldn’t do it alone.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Viana Communications was built on one simple truth: nonprofits can’t thrive on passion alone. They need healthy culture, clear communication, and sustainable systems to truly fulfill their missions. We’re a collective of specialized brands designed to help nonprofits do exactly that – from the inside out.

Under the Viana Communications umbrella, we operate four complementary divisions:

Nontoxic Nonprofits helps organizations heal dysfunctional workplace culture and strengthen intergenerational communication.

Viana Social provides full-service social media and digital strategy designed specifically for mission-driven organizations.

NonprofiText offers plug-and-play communication templates that save nonprofits hours of writing time while keeping their messaging professional and donor-ready.

Opscale helps nonprofits streamline internal systems and operations so their teams can work smarter, not harder.

What sets us apart is that we don’t just do marketing – we build the foundation for communication health and operational clarity. We help nonprofits fix the root causes of misalignment that hold their missions back, not just the symptoms.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of how cohesive and mission-centered our approach is. Every Viana Communications brand is connected by a single philosophy: that clarity, trust, and alignment create healthier, more effective organizations. We help teams communicate better, collaborate better, and serve better.

At the end of the day, our work helps nonprofits spend less time firefighting and more time focusing on what really matters: their impact.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is helping mission-driven people work in environments that actually support their mission. I’ve seen far too many nonprofits full of good intentions struggle under poor communication, unclear leadership, or burnout culture, and it’s heartbreaking, because those challenges are completely preventable.

I care deeply about clarity, integrity, and trust – the building blocks of any healthy organization. When teams feel heard, aligned, and equipped to communicate effectively, everything else flows more naturally: fundraising improves, morale rises, and the mission becomes sustainable.

At Viana Communications, everything we create – whether it’s a leadership workshop, a social media campaign, or a toolkit – is built around that same belief. Because if we can help nonprofits work better internally, they can do more good externally. And that ripple effect is what drives everything I do.
