Today we’d like to introduce you to Lashawn Baker.
Hi Lashawn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Well, I’m a simple, classy Detroit girl living in Georgia, so the grind is in me. I was adopted, so I learned early that life can flip fast and still work out. In 2014 I discovered Wake Up Now and saw people living well without a 9 to 5. I kept getting fired and knew I had to change. That MLM program gave me hope and showed me another path.
In 2015 I hit a rough season and spent 26 days in Cobb County jail. Sitting still gave me time with God. I cried. I prayed. I listened. At first I was too mad to hear anything. Then the assignment got clear. Help people who are on the edge like I was. I walked out on August 5, 2015, and the next Sunday I went out to serve. I wanted to be legit. My church friend Randy helped name the work G.L.A.S. Angels, which means Giving Love, Awareness, and Support. About fifteen people came with me. We packed bags, shared food and toiletries, and checked on folks. We kept it simple and consistent and the work grew.
Later I was in a serious car accident. The doctors called it a traumatic brain injury and warned me I might not remember much. I chose differently. I leaned on God, wrote things down, kept routines, and stayed close to service. Out on outreach I saw people fighting harder battles than mine, and I knew I would be okay. Day by day my mind got stronger and my purpose got clearer.
Today I run a portfolio of mission driven companies that work together like a relay team. I help founders win steady work with simple systems. I manage delivery with tight operations. I improve service businesses by fixing the back end that drives profit. I work real estate that supports housing and stability. The nonprofit is the heartbeat though. It turns generosity into beds, essentials, and next steps. My superpower is turning messy problems into clear workflows. I hire good people, move fast without losing heart, and focus on outcomes you can measure, partnerships that are real, and growth that serves people first.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been smooth. Life is a roller coaster ride, to say the least. I have had seasons of getting fired, a jail stint that made me sit with God, and a car accident where doctors warned me about memory loss. After Covid I was often serving alone. Some days I post a win and minutes later a mom with five kids asks for housing I cannot provide. That breaks my heart. I have also had nonprofit groups I tried to help go around me, copy my work, or take relationships I built. When I bring people together, there is always a risk that one person tries to take over. Add funding gaps, burnout, and the hard lesson of setting boundaries so I can keep going.
What keeps me steady is faith, simple routines, and community. I cry, pray, write it down, and take the next small step. I slow my reactions and choose my response. On the practical side I protect my peace. I use clear roles, written agreements, and non-circumvention language. I track deliverables and keep receipts. I choose partners by fruit now, not promises. I celebrate small wins and show up anyway. I believe God sends little helpers right on time. We always have two options. Ignore it or lean in. I choose to lean in.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I build people first ventures that work together. I teach founders to win steady work with simple systems, run delivery on time, and fix back end and cash flow so service businesses grow. I also help families avoid foreclosure and house people who are homeless and seniors. On YouTube as GovCon LaShawn I teach and keep it simple so anyone can follow.
People know me for clear communication, fast follow through, and help that feels human. I cut red tape, keep paperwork simple, and track outcomes so progress is clear. I am most proud when someone moves from crisis to stable. What sets me apart is Detroit grit, clean operations, and faith in God that keeps me going.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Work with me as a partner, a client, or a supporter. Hire my team for training, procurement, or operations so we can help you win steady work and deliver on time. Collaborate on housing, employer pipelines, outreach events, or skills workshops. Support the mission through monthly giving, volunteer days, and in-kind goods. If you have buildable land in Georgia or a reliable van or SUV, we will put it straight to work with a clean title and a tax receipt. I keep it simple, transparent, and people first, and on a good day granny’s cake shows up at volunteer meetups. Start here and tell me how you want to plug in https://www.iamlashawnnicole.com
